I started Resident Alien about a month and a half ago and I'm really enjoying it. I watch it during cardio days at the gym so I'm only getting through about 1.5 episodes per week, but I find myself wanting to cheat and watch it more often.

It took me a few episodes to get into it, but I'm halfway into season 2 and finding it's right at the sweet spot of scifi and quirky comedy. It reminds me a bit of Northern Exposure with the character relationships and general tone, though its a very different show plot-wise.

Of course Alan Tudyk is fantastic as always but the rest of the cast is great too, and I'm really enjoying seeing each character's story develop. It was a nice surprise to see Linda Hamilton in the cast, amazing as always, playing a military general on the hunt for aliens.

I'm trying to avoid any kind of spoilers. But for those who don't know it's about an alien who crash landed on earth during mission and finds himself disguised as a doctor in a small Colorado town while he attempts to figure out a way home. It's funny, but Harry's (Tudyk) reflections on humanity as he tries to assimilate are often insightful and touching.

If you're looking for a sci-fi show that's not too heavy and more character than effects driven, it's worth checking out.

Careful — it only gets better

I'm excited to see where it goes :)

It took me a while to sit down and watch it (Season 3 was halfway through by the time I started), and very quickly fell in love with it. Sad it was canceled after the 4th season, but at least they wrapped it up pretty cleanly.

Well I'm glad to hear it at least got an ending anyway. That's my biggest fear with starting a new show now-so many of them just stop midway through a major plot and leave things hanging.

Alan Tudyk is gold, and this show is so much fun. It gets better as it goes, and the representation is really solid

Absolutely loved this show and very glad it wasn't one that either:

Got cancelled unexpectedly

Stayed on so long it completely lost its plot

Don't get me wrong, I feel it could easily have lasted a few more seasons, but, it was really good for its entire run and that's not a bad thing either.

Also - Don't skip the intro! It's slightly different every time and basically hilarious every time!

It's a great show, at least the earlier seasons. And (from my limited perspective as a clueless outsider) seemed to represent native culture and integrate it into the storyline in a very natural and non-otherizing way.

For any trekkies out there, this show is directed by Robert Duncan McNeal(Paris from Voyager). It has been on my must watch list for a minute. Glad to hear it’s good!

It's ok. It's like a sillier, less philosophical Northern Exposure.

Overall a really great show. While of course Alan is fantastic, everyone does a really good job - even the kids.

I want to give a special shoutout to Corey Reynolds as Sheriff "Big Black" Mike. I really feel he was on the same level as Alan with his character.

It's a shame it was canceled, but they manage to wrap it up pretty well. It feels a bit rushed, but still works.

Love that show! The only fly in the ointment for me was D'Arcy. Her character got really grating as the show goes on

[–] thejoker954@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Everytime her character had any growth they seemed to immediately backtrack it and then double-down on her being a screwup.

[–] Nastybutler@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Exactly. It's like the writers vacillated between giving her a redemption arc, and using her as a foil to drive a narrative where things were going well but they needed someone to screw something up, so back to the ol well.
