As skavau mentioned, this is something we have already been talking about how to handle better in a future version. You aren't the only one that has found them annoying. ๐

just gotta say you guys are awesome. I have seen these but it has not trickled through my noggin yet what is up with those, but now that its laid out it makes sense. Anyway its nice to be on something where you guys are so pro active your already looking at a fix.
Yeah, it has been a recurring topic of discussion among the threadiverse instance admins, and the frequency of this happening has been increasing. General consensus is that this is primarily being done by one user as a form of ban evasion (possibly). Basically, make an account, create a bunch of posts, then delete the account.
I think part of the motivation for the account deletion is that in lemmy, it is a lot more work on an admin's part to remove content after the creator's account has been deleted. I don't know the specifics because I have never tried it, but I have seen a number of lemmy admins complaining about it.
Thanks, I'm happy to hear it's being worked on!
We've been chewing this one over for the last week, as well as other similar issues.
I just implemented a change where if a very young account self-deletes all their posts are deleted too.
So don't put too much effort into engaging with prolific 1 day old accounts from lemmy.world.
This isn't ideal because they still get to flood our feeds initially but at least the moderation burden of cleaning up afterwards is reduced.
Previously I floated the idea of rate-limits but it was not popular. Perhaps rate-limts for new accounts would have been more acceptable...
rate-limits for new accounts make sense
Amazing, thanks!
Piefeds autodelete system for new accounts that set up and self-delete within a day is up and working. Just tested.
I have proposed that piefed implement a setting that allows instances to auto-remove all content by accounts that self-delete within a day. Even a week if necessary.
It could also be a toggle for communities too, rather than instance-wide settings.
- De-federate from the instance(s) that are allowing these post-then-delete-account tactics without intervention. Particularly if they are personal instances run by the individual who is doing this.
This would require defederating from lemmy.world, as the accounts are usually set up on there. We know who it is for the most part.
Can the account name not be retained, while giving the user the option to delete all PII associated with it?
Yes it's a heavily discussed topic, hopefully we'll have a way to solve this soon
