Usual suspects voting no. No real surprises here.

Hey, Argentina being the US's lapdog is a mostly a newish development. Give them a few years to hang Milei before we put them in that group for good.

[–] gary_host_laptop@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Honestly that will happen with any Latam country every few years, every now and then a very boot licking government will rule in some Latin American country.

[–] cecilkorik@piefed.ca 6 points 1 month ago

Well that's easily explained. The CIA doesn't technically have a completely unlimited budget and resources, so they have to shift their priorities around the continent occasionally. It might be random, I wonder if they have a big wheel they spin, like on "Wheel of Fortune" or if it's more like the big wheel on the "Price is Right". The big prize for this year is to topple the government and install a new puppet regime in... spins big wheel Venezuela, again! *everyone claps*

it happens every single time a leader is successful in steering its economy towards self sufficiency despite the road blocks put in place by the local american back oligarchy like it's happening in mexico right now.

unfortunately, it's going to take a while since his approval rating is high rn.

it would have taken a serious dip if trump hadn't given him a $20billion loan.

[–] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They already walked back on the loan lmao

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 month ago

i wouldn't doubt it since he already won re-election; it's mind boggling to me how well such antics work on the masses.

New vote from the $20B club

[–] oculi@anarchist.nexus 34 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I mean the vote seems performative afaict, my country is in favour despite being infamous for torturing political dissidents and executes hundreds of people for negligible crimes yearly .

But the fact the US, israel and (for obvious reasons ;)) now Argentina voted no on this is so comically evil lmao, not even lying just flat out admitting it

[–] Lussy@hexbear.net 21 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Comically evil settler states that exterminate the indigenous population band together.

[–] jack@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Argentina is by far the whitest, least-indigenous Latin American state of course.

Ratlines and their consequences

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

i would have guess that belize had taken that cake.

they went so far that it's slave descended croele language is more prominent than the local flavor of nahuatl.

[–] jack@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Honestly seems way better than most of the region. A negligible white population, prominent Mayan population, and the creoles may not be "indigenous" but they are certainly colonized. Garifuna are a Black-Indigenous mized people speaking mostly Arawakan.

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

the only reason i knew it was a thing at all was because of sopa de caracol. lol

late 80's / early 90's peak aesthetics warning. lol

[–] mrdown@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago

How many countries are helding israel accountable of torturing palestinians for 77 years?

[–] belastend@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 month ago

Both the Nos and the Abstentions are the usual suspects.

[–] chaosCruiser@futurology.today 11 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

It’s a bit like asking: How many of you are currently torturing people or planning to do so in the near future? Even if you aren’t actively participating in such heinous crimes, but your best buddy is, and you don’t want to sever the relationship, that counts as well.

[–] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 15 points 1 month ago

Even if you aren’t actively participating in such heinous crimes

We know at least 2 of those 3 do it. Then you have Argentina who really wants to be part of the group chat

[–] Not_mikey@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's not even that, a good chunk of the countries who voted yes probably are currently torturing people or planning to do so in the near future. Ffs North Korea voted yes. These are just the countries self righteous enough to think torturing is a good thing and are willing to go on record to say so.

[–] chaosCruiser@futurology.today 1 points 1 month ago

That is a good point. I wonder what they are planning.

[–] gary_host_laptop@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 month ago

Always the same map.

[–] minnism@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

Waiting to read how this is antisemitism and pro-terrorism... Come on Zionists do the thing for my bingo card.

[–] communism@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 month ago

Lol when I saw the title of this Lemmy post I thought to myself "I bet it's the two usual suspects voting no" and lo and behold. Plus their third.

[–] answersplease77@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

The US Argentinian's bailout is doing work

[–] Conselheiro@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 1 month ago

Actually it's not torture, it's Enhanced Interrogation Techniques. Totally different so it's completely fine. \s
