Barbarian (lemmy.zip)
submitted 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) by IWW4@lemmy.zip to c/movies@piefed.social

Yesterday I checked out Weapons and was really impressed by how good it was. So today I checked out Barbarian.

WHAT THE FUCK was that idiotic shit? The first 45 minutes or so was really good, full of tension and man I was on the edge of my seat.

And then the rest of the movie happened and BWHAHAHA it was so absurd and idiotic.

It is very clear the Creggar has an affinity for creepy looking female monsters but some critter who has lived its entire life in a cave under a house has super strength.

Whatever you do skip this crap.

Well that’s certainly a take. I watched it for the 2nd time recently and I think it’s a pretty solid flick that has a lot to say. I think the absolute absurdity it descends into was supposed to be part of the point, but I also like movies that are completely over the top - like Beau Is Afraid.

I still haven’t checked out Weapons yet but I keep hearing good things.

So was it the point or supposed to be the point?

What was the point it was making?

Well I guess it’s up to interpretation but one theme I took away from is

Tap for spoilerThe first half of the movie the woman protagonist is untrusting of the situation with the male. He eventually wins her trust over then dies.

In the meantime in the 2nd half, the douchebag character Justin Long constantly betrays her trust through various acts as the absurdity completely amps up.

This movie really helped reinforce my idea of going into movies blind.

Well... Sorry I recommended it? 😅

I'm sad that you hated it! But to each their own.

One of my most shameful boners tbh.

I thought the first half was interesting, how it subverted a lot of horror tropes and really played on the normal subtleties of human interaction. The second half definitely felt like a weird Whitest Kids sketch.

It almost felt like they didn't really know how to develop and end the first part.

I don’t really see how it subverted a lot of horror tropes other than sort of he was not her jailer.

Agreed that the opening was fantastic, and I thought the owner and flashback bits were great as well. I really only disliked the parts with the super strength 'monster'. The tonal shift from high tension to cartoonish violence undermined the strong introduction.

Weapons was far better as the tonal shift worked better and the over the top ending seemed more 'real' in the setting.
