I see links to 'that site' owned by 'that billionaire' all the time, be it in posts or comments...

Is it possible to auto-suggest using xcancel.com instead, if direct links are in posts or comments, or even auto-fix them?

You can use a plugin like this one for Firefox. Generally my preference is for redirecting to be done client side rather than for me, or prepared as an alternate option. Like in the cases of Youtube -> Invidious, Reddit -> Redlib, sometimes the service is offline which makes it hard to know what was originally linked.

Thanks, will check it out. I agree it should be the client/user's choice. I guess I would just like awareness of xcancel to get out there so people know about it as a way to avoid giving that site any more traffic.

Libredirect is another one that handles a bunch of similar redirections, although it's a bit buggy.

Might be worth looking at farside.link

I know of LibRedirect, which is the kind of thing you're looking for
