Last year i upgraded my parents' computers to mint and they were blown away and could use them immediately, my dad actually got angry that he had been thinking about switching to linux for so long without ever trying it out.

He couldn't believe how clean and fast everything was, updates, startup, emails, everything, he looked like a kid on Christmas.

And that was on a decade-plus old laptop that he had been running and hating Windows on ever since he bought it.

I might not be using GNOME any more but there is one design philosophy it pushed that stuck with me and I employ it now on all other DEs - fuck desktop icons! They lead to nothing but clutter, much better to have all of your folders neatly organised inside of your /home than plastered all across your desktop space.

I don't think I've used desktop icons for over 10 years

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Same. I actually get grossed out by a desktop with anything on it.

desktop icons get in the way of my anime wallpapers

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

exactly. i've got this beautiful screen, why would I want to clutter it with random icons.

Only other things I nowadays accept beside my wallpapers are widgets which add cute little animated figures to my desktop (which I arranged as a frame around the wallpaper-space).

I use my desktop as a temp folder and just keep all of the icons hidden. Out of sight, out of mind 😊

[–] green_copper@kbin.earth 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That's what the Downloads folder is for.

Nah, ~/temp/

Pretty sure this is about the comparison between energetically starting a new job vs the general burnout after being there a while, and the artist doesn't really give a shit about OS's.

sway user: the fuck do you need a desktop icon for?

[–] green_copper@kbin.earth 8 points 1 week ago (2 children)

What is the source or artist of this image?

[–] Auster@thebrainbin.org 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

For those that stick to Windows, best I could find was Winlaunch. According to it, it simulates de MacOS app drawer, but I didn't use MacOS enough to be able to tell, and I found it when looking for Android-like app drawers instead.

[–] Eheran@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

What do you need an app drawer for when you have a keyboard?

[–] Auster@thebrainbin.org 3 points 1 week ago

Preference and some programs being easier to find through such drawers.
