A source within Japan's prime minister's office said Thursday that the country needs nuclear weapons, remarks that deviate from the country's long-standing non-nuclear principles and could trigger backlash at home and abroad.

They’re probably right — historically, Japan has had a defense-only army and no nuclear arsenal, and depended on the US to defend it through treaties.

The current US administration has demonstrated that those treaties are likely worthless today; Japan can’t depend on the US to come to its aid if another country attacks them.

Recently Japan has had a defense-only army.

Historically, Japan tried to conquer all of Asia.

The only reason they didn’t possess nuclear weapons is because they hadn’t been invented yet.

Yeah idk what that guy is smoking. They had offensive weapons and used it to terrorize the entirety of Asia. Now Thatcher 2.0 wants offensive weapons again and we should be okay with it?

The word "Historically" usually includes events that occurred over 80 years ago... Japan was a rogue state that attacked multiple countries and massacred millions. To brush that all off just because they got militarily neutered after WW2 is a pretty silly thing to say.

Japan opposed iranian nuclear program and supported the sanctions. Such hypocrisy

Wait, now US will bomb Japan, right. Right?

Sure, maybe. I would like to remind everyone that this woman is a member of an insane cult called Unification Church which control politics in many parts of Asia. Not much better than Islam, Christianity or Judaism ofc. but I don't think we need more of these lunatics running around.

Yes. What the Ukraine war showed everyone was that defense treaties are meaningless if they aren't enforced, and therefore every country is on its own.

The best deterrent against an invasion is nuclear weapons, and so every country should stockpile as many nuclear weapons as possible.

🎶🎵🎶We will all go together when we go. What a comforting fact it is to know. With complete participation in that grand incineration, we will all go together when we go.🎶🎵🎶

Tom Lehrer

Edit: I actually got the end of the verse wrong.

Oh that’s rich.

Iran will get them long before Japan does. After what they did to China… it’s only a matter of time. China knows it, Japan knows it and sees the us slinking off that side of the world stage.

Just like at a hood party Japan is getting knocked out before they leave. Their boy been attentive but he seems to be leaving with that chick over there… China is perking up and no way they are gonna let em slide.

If you don’t mind the allegory.

Ooh, I've got another Tom Lehrer song for this...

🎶🎵 First we got the bomb and that was good 'cause we love peace and motherhood. Then Russia got the bomb but that's ok because the balance of power is maintained that way. Who's next?🎵🎶
