Please include sources for any claims; baseless speculation is counterproductive. Remember that this is not a win for the US, just another outburst of a dying empire.

Went to protest at the US embassy in Brussels. Probably around 600-800 people there I guess. As far as I could tell we were the only party there. The rest was different orgs. Not even the Greens were there.

Also, the US embassy is funny. All the other embassies are just building but the US one is a fortress with spiky fences, cameras and armed guards.

The turnout was bigger than I expected really. Lots of communists around, which was nice.

[–] Gosplan14_the_Third@hexbear.net 27 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

100 people at my local one, which is actually pretty good for the place (no embassy, just a square). A fight (between participants) almost broke out lol

[–] SlayGuevara@lemmygrad.ml 23 points 3 weeks ago

There was some discussion between participants at our protest too. They seemed to be Venezuelan but no actual fighting luckily.

Let this be a lesson in the failure of democratic socialism. The US destroyed Salvador Allende's Chile, and has now started to destroy Chavez's Venezuela.

After revolution, arm yourself and kill all gusanos. Then try to get nukes.

Any serious movement should be applying this for survival

Developing military capabilities for protecting your country should be a top priority goal for any serious socialist project.

Ngl I miss when Bourgeois foreign policy makes sense. I mean I know that this obviously isn't over, but what went wrong here? I feel like something went wrong on their end, but what would it be.

[–] Conselheiro@lemmygrad.ml 47 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

This is the usual Trump propaganda and "diplomacy" tactic. Build up to some explosive action that shocks the world, announce a complete and total achievement of their war goals prematurely and capitulation from the opposition, then continue negotiating the details quietly with the very much not defeated opposition for more limited war goals.

It serves as a way to disarm domestic opposition, as people will believe "it's already over" and so that there's nothing to be done and magnify and normalize the actions abroad with their media monopoly. Then the opponent has to catch up to them with their smaller media presence in the world stage and language barrier.

This has been a trend this whole presidency, the conflicts with Sheinbaum and Petro early on, tariffs on Brazil among others. People often act as though Trump is crazy and unpredictable, but he's actually pretty repetitive in his methods.

The US bombed hospital facilities in its attack on Venezuela

In a statement released this Sunday, the IVSS (Venezuelan Institute of Social Security) asserted that the US attack against Venezuela, which included the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro, targeted “warehouses where supplies and equipment for kidney patients are stored.”

According to the statement, the attack targeted "goods intended for the protection of health" "of a vital nature" for patients, thus revealing the "terrorist nature of the United States Government".

Honor and glory to the Cuban fighters that gave their lives to protect Maduro! 🫡

Victims of a new criminal act of aggression and state terrorism, perpetrated against the sister Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela by the United States, 32 Cubans lost their lives in combat actions and after fierce resistance, who were carrying out missions representing the Revolutionary Armed Forces and the Ministry of the Interior, at the request of counterpart bodies of the South American country.

From Cuban President Canel:
Information from the Revolutionary Government on combatants who fell in the line of duty in Venezuela.

As a result of the criminal attack perpetrated by the United States government against the sister Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in the early hours of January 3, 2026, 32 Cubans lost their lives in combat while carrying out missions on behalf of the Revolutionary Armed Forces and the Ministry of the Interior, at the request of counterpart agencies in the South American country.

Faithful to their responsibilities for security and defense, our compatriots fulfilled their duty with dignity and heroism and fell, after fierce resistance, in direct combat against the attackers or as a result of the bombing of the facilities.

Once their identities had been verified, the families of our fallen comrades were informed and received the heartfelt condolences and support of Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, leader of the Cuban Revolution, and Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, first secretary of the Party Central Committee and president of the Republic, as well as the heads of both ministries.

Victims of a new criminal act of aggression and state terrorism, the combatants knew how to raise high, with their heroic actions, the feelings of solidarity of millions of compatriots. The Revolutionary Government will organize the appropriate actions to pay them the tribute they deserve.

🇻🇪🪧 This is what the streets of Caracas look like during the protest against US aggression

✊ For hours, thousands of people have gathered on the main roads of the Venezuelan capital to demand the release of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and to denounce Washington's actions in their country.

🗣 People of all ages gathered and chanted slogans such as “The homeland is not for sale, the homeland must be defended,” among others.

Stuff like this will never be shown by the pro imperialist media and the gusanos that parrot it

Trump has said that Mexico, Colombia and Greenland are actual options for the US at the moment. The US is on a war path threatening not only a bordering country but a NATO and EU member state as well. This could very well signal the end of the US and maybe the EU.

I sometimes keep going back to this article on Chomsky by Dashthered, especially the bits on Chavez and Maduro (well worth a a read again):

https://dashthered.medium.com/the-anti-chomsk%C3%BFng-66dcd8224729

Venuzuela (following from the likes of Allende) is what all these anti-tankie left/rad-liberals nominally shoukd want when they say they want "socialism" but still hold electoralism as their primary means of envisioning democracy. And this is what happens - either you get coups/assasinations Allende/Morales style or in order to survive against imperialism you have to be more authoritarian against capital and imperialism.

So after seeing all these trial and tribulations and still want to be "anti-tankie" it really is highlighting the privilege of the westerner armchair "socialist"; their class on the global stage and the material conditions they benefit from that relationship overrides everything else.

The material always comes before the idea.

Analysis from a Cuban Telegram channel:

The US did not win.

(Translation and excerpt relevant to this discussion)

spoiler

I have been very critical of the reckless statements made over the last three days. If you notice, when Comrade Díaz-Canel goes to the Anti-Imperialist Tribune, the relevant authorities already know what happened there, and our casualties were being confirmed. Everything must be handled confidentially and responsibly. Cuba is part of the war; the last direct confrontation with Yankee forces was in Grenada 42 years ago (October 1983).

The days go by, and as time passes, information and situations come to light, while others remain in the shadows of the investigation. Political maneuvers continue, and those in the worst position are the Yankees. The reasons are obvious. The only “positive” thing is that they have two “narco-terrorists” in prison. But they have some unresolved problems:

01.- They were unable to establish a bridgehead in Venezuelan territory in Caracas, at La Carlota base.
02.- Not a single liter of oil.
03.- The National Assembly has reinstated the Chavista leadership, with the support of even the opposition.
04.- The Executive Vice President assumes her powers, in accordance with the Constitution. Her statements are EXACTLY the same as those made by Nicolás Maduro to journalist Ignacio Ramonet three days earlier. I will upload the video so you can hear and read both.
05.- The Venezuelan exiles are happy, and none of them plan to return to Venezuela. What patriots!
06.- An opposition dynamited by Donald Trump himself.
07.- Venezuela continues to be called the “Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.”
08.- The Armed Forces continue to be called the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB).
09.- Diosdado Cabello continues to be responsible for the country's security and is second in command of the party after Maduro.
10.- Maduro remains the constitutional president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
11.- All Chavista power remains exactly the same at all levels and in all territories, whether at the national or regional level. Governorships, mayoralties.
12.- The entire economic apparatus continues to function as usual, and the government is the same Chavista government as always.
13.- Nicolás Maduro's son, a deputy in the National Assembly, expressed his unconditional support for Delcy Rodríguez. Did the son also betray his father?

Ah, are they being threatened, warned, pressured, etc., etc., etc.? No one can deny it, but will it have any effect? I very much doubt it. If you review the statements, the only ones who are changing are the Yankees, not the Chavistas, who have taken a series of legal measures.

Lessons learned? Many. Was there betrayal? That has been the constant question, I believe, but I have been careful, because what I believe is not what people believe. I think it was a long-term operation, with inside information. There was no institutional betrayal, but rather betrayal from the inner circle, which was operational. I could be wrong, but I think it was at the level of the military headquarters near the White Palace, which handles everything related to presidential security.

They managed to place their team in Caracas, just as Mossad did in Tehran, and some SBU and GRU have done in Russia. Cuba cannot let the enemy get close to the interior of the country, and the enemy has a bone to pick with Cuba, which is the biggest one it could have, and as I already explained, time is what is weighing on Trump.

We know the path and profile of the individuals they can potentially recruit. Today we are in a dangerous situation, not because they are coming to take Cuba, as I have already said, Venezuela cannot, geographically, be taken. Cuba, yes, with a big difference, there would be no Cubans left, and they would also lose many thousands... they know that.

We already have the picture: an external struggle, with Maduro and Flores, who legally remains the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, turning his trial into a political process against Yankee interference, a clear violation of international law. The beginning of a movement to support Maduro and Venezuela, not only around the world, but also in the US itself.

Internally, there is ongoing mobilization with a clear objective, which generates two situations: the presumption of innocence makes Maduro an accused person and not a guilty one, and all these times are decisive for the Bolivarian Revolution.

The Yankees will have to choose whether to act on their Monriana bravado, whether in Cuba, Colombia, Mexico, or Venezuela itself. And where they have the most trouble is with Cuba. Why? Because economically, it is of no benefit to Trump, only an expense, and because militarily, it has too high a cost. Cuba will be defended by all the peoples of the world, and not necessarily with demonstrations alone... I don't know if that makes sense.

South American countries that celebrated Maduro's kidnapping want to accelerate the deportation of Venezuelans

Just hours after Washington's attack on Caracas, several South American administrations seem to want to take advantage of the situation to resolve the challenge that Venezuelan migration has represented for them in recent years.
One of the most explicit cases occurred in Argentina, where the Minister of Security, Patricia Bullrich, spoke to hundreds of Venezuelans who had gathered to celebrate the illegal detention of Maduro, reminding them that they would now have to return to their homeland.
"Maduro is no longer here, he was taken away, and now a path begins where all of you will walk and return to your beloved Venezuela ," the Secretary of State said, concluding her message with "we will miss you."

Warning speculative analysis for now that is shared from a Cuban Telegram

🪖During the attack on targets in Caracas, US military helicopters entered from the mountains and uninhabited areas at extremely low altitude, remaining in the “shadow” of Venezuelan air defenses, which had already been weakened by electronic warfare and a cyberattack.

The US helicopters were unable to capture La Carlota air base, where they intended to land troops and use it as a logistics center, but they continued their kidnapping mission, managing to leave in just over two hours.

Delcy Rodríguez on economic exchange with the US: "Venezuela's economic relations will continue to be diversified"

Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, clarified that the January 3rd attack has created a blemish on relations with the United States unlike anything seen before . However, she emphasized that this does not impede the flow of trade that has been maintained throughout history.

However, she emphasized that this scenario does not halt the country's dynamism in the international market, where Venezuela continues to consolidate its presence in a sovereign manner.

She specified that of the 71% of the oil export market, 27% is destined for the United States, confirming that the economic relationship remains active despite the serious political conflict.

Fico: "I give Trump credit for one thing: he didn't justify his decision with false pretexts about the need to spread democracy or protect human rights, as the Biden administration or any previous American president would have done. He openly talked about controlling Venezuelan oil and the entry of American companies into the Venezuelan oil industry"

🇻🇪🇺🇸 #Brief Analysis by Franco Vielma | The biggest conspiracy theory about Delcy Rodríguez betraying Maduro was put forward by Maduro's kidnapper himself: Trump

spoiler

So, for some, Trump suddenly became a credible, honest guy who tells the truth, doesn't lie, and doesn't manipulate facts to achieve his goals. The objective truth is that Trump is a convicted felon, prosecuted for crimes and accused of pedophilia, who lied in foreign policy when talking about Gaza, Ukraine, Venezuela (fentanyl, cocaine, immigrants released from prisons and mental hospitals, etc.), tariffs, and many other issues. Trump, the credible one.

But then why does Trump insist that Delcy must cooperate and “is cooperating”?

1.- Trump says this not to convince Venezuelans, but rather to convince Americans. He wants to project the image that he is in control of the situation and that there will be no “chaos the day after” he kidnaps the Venezuelan head of state.

2.- Trump wants to break the Chavista leadership in Caracas, and if he has to generate intrigue to do so, it is an effective and inexpensive method.

3.- He exerts pressure and intimidation, asserting that he will take control of the country. His card is force, and he is using it.

4.- At the same time that he indicated that Delcy was “collaborating,” he also threatened her with “a fate worse than Maduro's” if she did not submit to his authority. The threat is unnecessary if Delcy was supposedly co-opted.

5.- Trump cannot maintain internal order in Venezuela unless he sends troops like he did in Iraq. He does not want to do that. Only Chavismo can guarantee internal order. And both sides agree on the need for that order. So Trump makes it seem that something Chavismo will do out of its own conviction is being done for him. He wants to appease the Americans who criticize him.

6.- Trump insists on a transition that must be carried out by the Chavismo leadership itself, but supervised by the US. This is the most vague part of his proposal, but to make it clearer, he dismissed María Corina Machado. However, he does not set deadlines, he talks about oil, oil infrastructure, etc., and then, if anything, elections. To do that, he must say that he controls Delcy, even if it is not true. Saying “I control” is the best way to cover up the bottom line: “he needs Chavismo in charge, Delcy,” to present his strategy as the winner the “day after” Maduro.

The other question: why does Delcy Rodríguez indicate that it is necessary to have relations of respect, mutual recognition, and cooperation after what has happened?

1.- Maduro, Venezuela, has been the country that has most defended the implementation of energy agreements with the US. Venezuela was the one that defended Chevron's position in the face of Trump's new sanctions. Why? Because putting US interests in Venezuela is a way of protecting its own oil industry from the same sanctions that come from one US government to another. To do this, it is necessary to establish relations.

2.- It is true that Maduro himself, even under the worst threats (such as those now hanging over Delcy), insisted on the importance of dialogue. That was public and well known.

3.- Delcy insists that Maduro is being held hostage and her first decision as acting president is to create a commission for his release. As in any kidnapping situation, you cannot burn your bridges with the kidnapper. You must negotiate. You must mediate.

4.- Trump is a megalomaniac narcissist. Delcy understands his psychology, especially now that she has the position of power and proven ability to execute it. She is also an excellent communicator and negotiator, capable of adapting to the context. Let's try to understand not the form, but the substance.

5.- In his own way, Trump needs to build bridges. He kidnapped Maduro, but he has not achieved regime change. To a large extent, he depends on Chavismo in Caracas. In his own way, Trump prefers to say, “I'm in control,” rather than, “I have to negotiate.” Delcy must be in tune with that.
