A recent InSight report revealed that three of the ELN's five main fighting divisions operate from Venezuelan territory, using it for logistics, training and cross-border movement

Colombia's National Liberation Army (ELN) and dissident factions of the former FARC rebel group issued defiant statements following the U.S. military operation in Venezuela that led to the capture of Nicolás Maduro, framing the attack as a violation of regional sovereignty and vowing armed resistance against Washington.

In a statement released by its Eastern War Front, the ELN said that "once again U.S. imperialism violates the national sovereignty of the countries of Our America and the world," and rejected what it described as a U.S. attack on the "Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela."

The group expressed "solidarity and support for the Venezuelan people and government" and called on Latin American nations to "reject the gringo aggression, defend national sovereignty, and embrace unity and popular resistance," as Infobae reports.

Those Colombian guerillas have been hiding in the jungle for decades. When the main body of FARC surrendered in 2017, many of them had never seen a smartphone before. They've been living the asymmetric warfare life since god knows when, they would prove extremely difficult to root out.

It would be Vietnam all over again.

Yet another 20 year war the US will "win".

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 39 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

We don't even pretend we won in Vietnam.

[–] 0_o7@lemmy.dbzer0.com 20 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Oh you might be surprised how many think they did.

Same with Afghanistan

Because some people go: akshually, we inflicted more casualties on the Vietnamese than they did to us so technically we are not defeated.

It's an often repeated excuse since the US signed the Paris Peace accords and agreed to pull out of Vietnam. A US official at the time told that to his North Vietnamese counterpart. The based North Vietnamese official quipped "that may be the case, but that is irrelevant."

So dumb. Who's in charge when the dust clears? There's your winner.

Hint: It wasn't America. It's never America. We haven't won an armed conflict since WWII. Guerilla Warfare is highly effective against a massive force that can't get out of its own way.

After 20 years, and trillions of dollars, we left Afghanistan, and the Taliban was back in power within hours. What a waste.

Osama Bin laden won 9/11.

Also the defense contractors are likely happy that this happened, more money for them, and keeping the war going as long as possible even if there is no end in sight. so they donate alot to the gop.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 2 points 3 weeks ago

That's the point of ALL wars these days. The outcome never really works out, the people are never going to be pleased with the American invaders, even if they did take out the dictator. The likelihood is that they killed a whole lot of people doing that.

The big winner in any war is the military industrial complex, and they are always the ones shouting for more war.

They've been sitting around since the end of Afghanistan, restocking the shelves, but that's finished, and everybody is itching to get back to production, so it's time for a new war.

We haven’t won an armed conflict since WWII

Theres Grenada and Panama.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Invading elementary schools doesn't count.

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

We're actually quite bad at that, see Uvalde.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 2 points 3 weeks ago

And Parkland.

What scares me is Trump may actually "win".

By this I mean, in Vietnam the US had an interest in installing a puppet government and having another state to oppose the Soviet Union.

Trump just wants the oil fields. He's not above leveling the whole country just to ensure access to the oil fields. He's flirted with the idea of nukes before and I don't put it past him to indiscriminately nuke large swaths of the rainforest/interior of Venezuela.

He's mad enough to do it too, and his base will support him. We've known a US that commits war crimes and then tries to ignore them. We've never seen a US willing to proudly and loudly commit war crimes to achieve its goals.

Now is it a victory to render nearly half the country unliveable for decades? I personally dont think so, but Trump does and that's the issue

funny vietnam ended up being friendly/frenimies with the US overtime.

[–] arrow74@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I wouldn't say friendly more like not hostile.

Like I wouldn't call China a friendly country to the US, but they are its biggest trading partner

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 11 points 3 weeks ago

And Afghanistan. And Iraq.

Wow, it’s almost like repeating history causes history to repeat.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 13 points 3 weeks ago

"Those who ignore history, are doomed to repeat it" is supposed to be cautionary, but for MAGA, it's a game plan.

[–] SpookyBogMonster@lemmy.ml 5 points 3 weeks ago

First as tragedy, then as something else, I think

Just a reminder that America has not won an armed conflict since WWII, and they have been absolutely savaged by guerilla warfare strategies in multiple conflicts.

Everybody fears the American Military, and they will do a lot of damage when they come to your neighborhood, but ultimately, they can't get out of their own way.

[–] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Yes this.

The US Military is setup to fight and disable entire countries, not to sustain a ground occupation contested by native guerrilla forces.

Urban warfare and the fact that native attackers can hide in civilian populations will grind any army down. There are simply too many avenues of attack in an urban environment.

The Army wants to draw a line in the ground and completely dominate one side of the line and then deploy the capability to rain death on anybody within 100+ miles of that line. They don't want to be clearing a neighborhood house to house and trying to detect every IED and ambush when any civilian could be holding a grenade or gun and any pile of rubble or trash could be an explosive.

The only way this has been avoided in modern times is when Israel completely flatted most of Palestine, killing a large amount of civilians in the process. I don't think Donald Trump would try to avoid that option.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 4 points 3 weeks ago

It always amazes me when someone thinks they will invade a country, and deal with the old guy, install their own guy, and the people will all just be okay with it? They may have hated the old guy, but their going to hate the new guy just as much. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

Unless the invading force is willing to get genocidal, which Stephen "PeeWee Himmler" Miller definitely is.

And even saying they won WWII is generous in itself, they joined the winning side in progress.

FUNNY HOW the msms suddenly dropped venezuela from the news, the moment the minnesota shooting happen, they need distractions constantly to get away from the epstein files.

I am expecting them to join ICE, and go to town on MAGA. No better place to attack a titan, than from the insides of the beast.

[–] fort_burp@feddit.nl 9 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Sure getting a job with ICE is easy, but how would a bunch of Colombians enter the country and get a work permit in the first place?

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 12 points 3 weeks ago

When you become ICE, accountability and legality is for everyone else. ICE cosplay is a Temu away.

Buy Trump's Golden Pass for $5 mill?

[–] ArcaneSlime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 weeks ago

How the hell did a random Columbian Guerilla end up running a fucking DPMS Kitty Kat?! Of all the choices in the world, that certainly is one of them.

Understandable
