Canadian whiskey is insufferable though. Maybe just switch to Scotch?

[–] Lembot_0006@programming.dev 30 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Alcohol is one of the easiest things to substitute. Why even consider American alcohol?

[–] ThunderclapSasquatch@startrek.website 4 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Because spirits are an art as much as a science.

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Like with cooking it can be both. For truly terrific stuff is definately art, however for mediocre stuff it's mainly biochemistry.

[–] ThunderclapSasquatch@startrek.website 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Hell the high end stuff goes beyond and into "this can only be made properly in this county" because of climate effecting the aging process and ingredients

[–] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Canadians are better artists.

[–] ThunderclapSasquatch@startrek.website 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Debatable at best, the USA produces some of the best spirits on the planet.

[–] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You're right. That is extremely debatable.

The USA doesn't even produce some of the best spirits on their own contentent.

You might want to look up what that word means.

[–] ThunderclapSasquatch@startrek.website -1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I'm indigenous I'm an expert at identifying bigotry.

[–] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

I'm queer, married to a trans person, and my brother and his family is Anishinaabe. I think I might have a bit of experience in it too. And thinking "Americans don't make good booze" isn't bigotry, it's nationalism. Saying "Gay people", or "Indigenous people" don't make good booze is bigotry.

Also, saying something like "American Whisky is water with an alcohol content" is also more of a personal opinion rather than an outright attack on any particular group.

You might want to refresh your language a little bit.

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

With brands you know for years, you know what you're getting. Some folks probably don't want to test new ones. Maybe we should provide substitution proposals.

[–] arrow74@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Honestly I find most liquors are easy enough to substitute for the average drinker.

Yeah if you're some kind o whiskey connoisseur that drops hundreds or even thousands on bottles there's maybe a difference. But for the average sub $100 you'll easily find a substitute just moving within a similar price point

Depending on the person beer can be a bit harder, but not impossible by any means

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Maybe I'm not the right person to have started the conversation I guess. I've got a 500€ bottle of single barrel Scotch here, and a lot of her lesser sisters. This rhymes to a less insane degree with gin, rum, tequila and various European fruit distillations. Then there's the wine, and since I've been friend-dopted by my best vineyard owners, this game has improved a lot as well.

I do enjoy stuff like this, and it's quite a journey to find what you're into.

For a mixer I wouldn't go into so much detail, of course.

[–] MushuChupacabra@piefed.world 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Two things.

Americans don't produce anything as good as a single malt scotch.

Scotland would never spontaneously shred their international reputation the way America has, so international scotch sales will be safe in perpetuity.

[–] ThunderclapSasquatch@startrek.website 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

We absolutely do make competitors that rival Scottish single malt, we just don't copy them. I understand it's fashionable to shit on everything American but you would do well to avoid sinking into outright bigotry

[–] MushuChupacabra@piefed.world -1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

You make nothing that rivals Scottish single malt.

You would do well to avoid tone policing. concentrate more on domestic sales, to compensate for the international sales that you're never getting back.

[–] ThunderclapSasquatch@startrek.website 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You realize you are speaking to a person right? Again, sliding into actual bigotry where you're hate blinds you to reality. We have several distilleries, most in blue states mind you, that compete and even win against Scottish single malts

[–] MushuChupacabra@piefed.world 0 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It only feels like bigotry to you.

What is happening is shunning, and it is happening as a direct consequence of your POTUS.

You may be miffed, but the fact of the matter is that you do not distil a single spirit that the rest of the world requires. Anything distilled in the United States is utterly replaceable by something as good, or better from elsewhere.

You're going on and on about the quality of what's distilled on American soil, with no understanding of what actually makes it distasteful.

[–] ThunderclapSasquatch@startrek.website 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

No, it's bigotry I'm something of an expert at identifying it being Indigenous. I never said you couldn't replace American spirits, that's entirely you, I just stated the objective fact that we make world class spirits. Frankly you seem to be the only one angry and spewing hate. He's not my president either, I voted against him. And please enlighten me about the inherent distastefulness of our spirits I'm sure your reasoning is entirely logical

[–] MushuChupacabra@piefed.world 0 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I'll try to parse this out in a manner that will help you understand that you're pissing in the wind here.

You still think I am discussing flavor profiles. understand me when I say that I do not give a flying fuck, as I am talking about the fascism flavor that is now a permanent, never to be forgotten additive to all of your spirits, full stop.

You will not be able to remove that flavor with a good election cycle or two; the rest of the world sees how many of you can't be bothered to vote, how ineffectual the Democrats have been at preventing his re-election, and how the far right always show up to vote, and the avalanche of money that goes into keeping things that way. In other words, we have no reason to believe that you can punt Trump, and prevent another fascism run after he's gone.

So I sound angry to you. From a tortured point of view, you could call ignoring a product and keeping my wallet shut "anger". As for spewing hate, all I can say is that one thing that will not be spewing from my mouth is American spirits, or any other alcohol from the same country.

Hopefully, you're enlightened as to how fascism makes your spirits unpalatable.

there are no fucking specially aged oak barrels that will fix that.

[–] ThunderclapSasquatch@startrek.website 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

"Never to be forgotten" right because Germany is still a international pariah, same with Spain and Italy. This is my point, you've gone from justified shunning to irrational hate, I'm sorry you can't understand that.

[–] MushuChupacabra@piefed.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Nah, the hatred is rational. Your president has threatened to annex my country.

But you're insisting on keeping this up, so let's do this. I'm engaging with you on my relatively new piefed account, instead of my lemmy.world account. The sole reason that I have one is that some tankie was beaking off about piefed being crypto-fash, or whatever passes for tankie logic. Now I use the thing that they don't like, and also promote it. The product is good, but what is most enjoyable is knowing that tankies are annoyed.

Prior to your feeble tone policing attempt, I was fine with simply not purchasing American booze. Now, I am going to work harder at convincing others to do the same. That is a personalized, extra effort that I will put in, to honor your efforts here.

Tell me, what do you think hurts more: You calling me bigoted, or the Jim Beam main distillery closing for 2026?

[–] ThunderclapSasquatch@startrek.website 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

And the nationalist takes off his mask. Be careful not to become what you hate most.

[–] MushuChupacabra@piefed.world 1 points 3 days ago

Yup, you've totally unmasked me as someone who doesn't take kindly to invasion threats.

Be careful not to become what you hate most.

I fail to see how spending zero dollars on American booze would turn me into a republican.

[–] Lasherz12@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

There really isn't much reason to buy American when Argentina wine exists. California wines tend to be significantly more expensive too.

Beer is a bit of a different story, but Europe has the best imo.

If you like aged whiskey/bourbon a nice hack is using barrel chips and an ultrasonic cleaner to rapid age lesser liquors. It works super well even with a pretty junky cleaner.

8 feel bad for California, I'd rather focus on Kentucky whiskey and the other deep red states. They are the ones that need to be targeted.

[–] sorghum@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Kentucky has a Democratic governor

[–] madcaesar@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

I don't give a shit. Those fuckers gave us Mitch McConnell! He's been directly responsible for where we are. The damage he's done won't be fixed for generations.

[–] Quilotoa@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I thought they pulled US whiskey off the shelves.

[–] ieGod@lemmy.zip 4 points 6 days ago

The LCBO certainly did.

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 2 points 1 week ago

I was wondering why it would even still be there. Old pic I guess?
