Discussion about the aussie.zone instance itself

founded 2 years ago
MODERATORS

edit: changed proposed title to /c/aussocialism. Thanks Zagorath!

There are a few users on here, including myself, who discuss socialist politics. While some topics are interesting and relevant enough to post in other news and politics communities, others might only be interesting to other socialists, such as updates on local political organisations, discussing how theories apply to our economy, or drier historical questions. Consider /r/AustralianSocialism for some examples.

This community will be strictly for Aus/Oceania-specific posts, as there are plenty of communities on other instances for general memes, overseas politics, etc.

Can I recommend the name be something more like aussocialism? Personally I find it more useful if the name of the community itself, not just the combination of name + domain, tells you the subject? It's not as common on aussie.zone, but there are definitely general-purpose communities on feddit.uk, feddit.nl, lemmy.ca, and midwest.social, so it is helpful to give the community a name that makes its purpose clear without needing to read the sidebar.

Fair point, agreed and edited the post.

I'll be interested to read comparisons and contrasts with pacific island nation social structures with socialist theories. Considering a lot of those structures are an amalgam of Islander traditions influenced by imported organisational systems I'd imagine theres some very striking similarities and other parts that aren't so similar.

Never went on r/aussocialism, so i don't know what that was like, but a lot of these communities on lemmy I find can be very doctrinal or even dogmatic.

Yeah, that'd be nice it have. I'm happy to mod if you ever need an extra.

It'd be good to set it up early before a sectarian or reactionary group tries to do it, like we saw with /r/asksocialists (blatantly co-opted into an ACP grifter ad since late-2025). That said, I also think a more human site like aussie.zone would kick anyone who tried to turn a comm into an ad like that.

The refreshing part of having met people IRL in Australia, I think, is the majority of socialist identifying people in Australia don't have a hard-on for authoritarian regimes just because they claim to be socialist or are an enemy of the US (because apparently the US are the only imperialists... lol).

Though I have met a handful of such people IRL also, funnily enough, from the Australian Communist Party haha

I also vote on wanting this new community, mostly because lemmy.ml doesn't really align with the majority view of socialists (at least, that's my sense)

Just in case it was confusing, my comment was referring to the "American Communist Party" (known for "MAGA Communism").

"MAGA Communism"

Today I wish-I-didn't Learn

I think a community should definitely aim to have a small team of moderators who have a longish history on the server. You want people who understand what aussie.zones about in a situation where sudden growth of Lemmy were to occur.
