I don't like advertising for a monopoly run by a billionaire, even if it's a (mostly) "benign" monopoly, but Squeenix is gonna pull FF7 from stores, including The Big One™, and it will be replaced by an updated version with improved gameplay features.

If you have the old one, which is currently on sale at The Big One™, you will automatically get access to the updated version but imo the important thing is that the old version will be compatible with a ton of old mods that are unlikely to be compatible with the updated version because the updated one isn't backwards compatible with old saves - if it can't work with old saves then there's little chance it won't break the old mods.

If you've been thinking about it, if you love the original version, if you're not that comfortable with piracy, if you want to secure access to decades worth of modding of the game then now's the time. It will be a 2-for-1 purchase (kinda) and I guarantee you they're gonna jack up the price of the new release because that's exactly what they do.

PSA just get the original PC version from Internet Archive and download 7th Heaven. It has a piracy detector but the disks are original so it passes

These revisionist bastards will finally erase all evidence of "Aeris"

Eh, the version currently on there is janky as shit and loses video output if your screen blanks itself or you move your mouse out of the window and click off the game. If they are releasing the OG version as something running on a more modern engine than something written for Windows 98, that's probably not the end of the world.

Failing that, just pirate-jammin

It's not like PSX emulation is going anywhere lol

It seems people's main concern with this version going away is what'll happen to the mods made specifically for it

Yep, mods and the 1990s PC version had higher resolution rendering and textures. And I think the audio output used General MIDI (FF8 definitely did), so if you had a hardware synth box like a Roland MT-32 or SC-33 rompler kicking around, you got better music than the PSX version, too.
