I have this very cheap "200 games in 1" devices that has a game called "Pikachu" and it's just endless Tetris with a little dancing/cheering Pikachu frame.

I had to search this one. It was just a bootleg Tetris hahaha.

Are we talking about strictly Tetris concept only? Or any game that goes in that direction? Or about all games with "Tetris" in the name? And how far is it allowed to go, until its no longer Tetris? Have a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Tetris_variants

I grew up with Tetris on the original Game Boy from 1989. So I have a sweet spot for that game. There is Tetris & Dr. Mario on the SNES, which combines both games. I have so many memories with a friend playing a mixed mode where both games are played in a session. If we count anything that has Tetris in the name, then it's Tetris Attack on the SNES for me.

There are also Tetris variants I never played too much, but I think they would have been classics for me too. Tetris Battle Gaiden on SNES looks interesting and fun. Lot of people say Tetris The Grand Master (1 or 2) on Arcade (and later ported to other systems) might be the best version, but I never played it.

In short, I don't know how to answer this question. And I couldn't with a certainty either I think.

Tetrips, or maybe it was Tetripz, I can't remember, it's been years. It's Tetris except with crazy video effects that supposedly simulate being on various drugs. It's a lot harder to play when the whole screen is flashing and bouncing and twisting.

Lumines is a very fun one. In fact it’s so ingrained into me that the blocks fall in that way that I will mess up my Tetris blocks all the time.

The way it merged the music with the movements engages me so easily.

I only accept the 1989 Nintendo version of Tetris as "Tetris." Anything else is incorrect.

That said, there was a flash game in the early 2000s called Supertris that was amazing and held global high score lists. I played the shit out of that.

Tetris: The Grand Master is the only good Tetris. Honestly sad that they had a good thing going and TTC decided to throw it out in favor of Guideline.

I've really only ever played the GB version with various hacks. The Rosy Retrospective DX hack is pretty dope.

Techmino is excellent

[–] kaklerbitmap@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

I can't seem to find any trace of it now, but I had a version of Tetris on Macintosh back in the early 90s that I swear was just called "Annoying Tetris." It would insult your moves with sarcastic comments via audio samples as you played. When you died it would play a sample of Bill Paxton saying "Game Over, man! Game over!" from Aliens.

Depends on how strict we're being with "version of Tetris". If we're talking loosely about falling block puzzle games, then my favorite one is Attactics. It's part of UFO50.

Instead of four-block clusters, Attactics uses individual blocks that represent different types of troops, each one with a unique ability. And instead of falling from the top of the screen towards the bottom, they move from the left of the screen towards the right. And instead of forming complete lines in order to score points, they clash against the enemy's troops and attempt to make it to their fortress on the other side of the map.

Looking at Attactics on its own, it looks like a fast-paced simplified strategy game. But when you get your hands on the game, it becomes clear that it shares a lot in common with Tetris.

I had a game on my Pocket PC in the 2000s called Cyclotomix.

That was my favorite Tetris-like

First person Tetris was freaky.

I was obsessed with Faces a wee bit back in the day 😁

The New Tetris (N64). For the 4x4 block making, and the awesome drum & bass soundtrack!
