my mom later told me about the supposed widespread kidnappings throught the country and said I could've been kidnapped...

Oh yea I remember my parents installed those child safety lock thing that can allow you to lock the apartment door from the outside with the key... so that we can't run away when no adults are at home... Fire Hazard wtf...

No joke, I remember my parents installing "child safety locks" on the apartment door and it can lock from the outside by turning the key a certain way...
cuz sometimes me and my older brother was at home and no adults with us, so they had to lock the door from the outside to prevent us from running away...
I think this lock was installed after my running away incident...

Those couldn't hold me. I'd just unlock it and attach it to a nearby pole and sneak away. The tension from the pole usually bought me about a minute.
My kid did this and scared the shit out of us. The whole store was looking. This meme was posted in our family group chat.
My Mom did not give a fuck! We lived in a small town and could walk home if we weren't with her when she left.
Stay in the store, overnight, raid the staff fridge, fall asleep on a mound of pillows, hide again before the store opens, casually leave as they open, repeat for a couple of days.

Me in 1984 working at K-Mart cleaning the crap off the floor from the middle of those fixtures where you were hiding.
Did something similar once hiding in my little brothers carseat with a blanket covering me just right I guess to be very well hidden

My parents were checking out the building site for our new house in the woods and I got bored/tired and went back to the car to nap. They looked everywhere for me and I was just safe asleep.
