I played around with it a little while ago and it seems like a really strong contender to me. Open source, and basically clones the entire Discord UX, so your less technical friends will have a very easy adjustment. You can create servers and rooms like you'd expect, there's voice chat, private messaging, etc.
I tried signing up around noon today and got the invite link (expired) hours later, looks like they can't handle the influx from discord leavers 😅 (somehow both a good and a bad sign I guess)

It looks like a strong contender to me.
If just for group chats, Signal or SimpleX?
Maybe this is the time to just remove a tech platform from your life rather than replace it. I've rarely talked to anyone that misses these addictions once they stay off for more than 6months. Probably not what you are looking for here, but consider it if feasible.
