Being attacked by a knife sounds like a reasonable situation to open fire.

I mean, for a normal person maybe, but if you know how to fight or have a friend you don't need to shoot over a knife, and a cop should never be alone or untrained.

As someone trained to fight, if you CHOOSE to fight someone with a knife, while unarmed, you're a fucking idiot or out of options(a cop should never be out of options and their life should never be expandable, in my opinion). Its like that old Richard Prior bit "if someone pulls a knife on you and all you can pull out is a fist with some skin, you better RUN" I promise anyone with training will tell you the exact same thing or they are liars who've never been in the situation. Unarmed self defense is an absolute last resort, its trained, but, as a LAST resort. The main thing they teach you when you train armed vs unarmed self defense is you WILL be cut/stabbed, your job is to try to minimize damage and subdue IF possible. A gun takes the risk out. I don't care if I'm down voted to hell, this is reality.

The most important lesson for guard duty when I was in the army way to always escalate a step higher than the attacker. If they use a knife I use a gun.

One thing I always teach my students (martial arts) is that nobody wins a knife fight. Even if you "win", you're probably getting cut, and it probably won't be pretty.

This is of course, according to the cops. Also:

The police officer was not harmed and no one else was wounded.

Hm. Gonna wait for the "non official" version of the story. Video evidence and testimonials. Maybe it all happened as they said, it's possible. But still.
