I once played the C64 version of regular Mario Bros. It was a surprisingly good port.

Yes Great Giana Sisters was heavily influenced by Super Mario Brothers, but someone has semi-recently ported SMB1 itself to the C64, using code from the original NES ROMs. Modern Vintage Gamer did a video on it yesterday, which may have inspired OP.

I remember trying the C64 port a couple years ago, pretty incredible stuff that they managed to do
