Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

Let's be clear, Trump is a sociopathic pedphile, no doubt about it and anything coming out of his administration and himself is a grift.

The dude wants to "Make America Great Again" ( I lol each time i say this as it sounds like a toddler playing with his toys) by destroying everything else around it. He said as much and he hates EU, because they are making fun of him and treating him accordingly: like a bully with no balls.

I would rather suport EU censorship than allow trash like X-Twitter to only spread lies and disinformation, like it currently does, under the rule of a technoNazi.

Ironic, given that it's many US companies that block European web visitors because they don't want to comply with EU privacy rights.

A VPN run by the US government

The site will be hosted at "freedom.gov," the sources said

So... they will just ban that too then, what a waste of time and money lol

Nope, the EU is all in favor of free speech, this site won’t be banned, US Americans can publish any brainfarts they want. Don’t fall for trump’s propaganda. (Within Europe, hate speech can lead to legal repercussions, laws do not allow eg the harassment of children, women, minorities, politicians, or (very limited and well defined) attacks against our constitutions or democracy; that’s where freedom of speech may, in extreme cases, end).

[–] pixxelkick@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If the site is meant to be a mechanism to circumvent policy with no other use case, it will probably get banned.

Thats not "free speech", and free speech us only a protected right up until it starts to impact other human rights.

People seem to forget that free speech is not the only protected right, and that in most countries its definitely not #1 on the priority list, usually several other rights come before it.

My guess is that this is a propaganda effort meant to counter that EU countries is putting pressure on social media to moderate hate speech and importantly disinformation.

Having an official US government site means both that it will have higher apparent legitimacy (compared to a random X post) for people who want to believe. It’ll likely also mean that there is no European corporate presence to pressure so the only option would be to escalate to blocking the entire site, which I don’t see happening tbh.

The article said Germany removed 14k things from social media. Many of which were to protect Israel I'm sure. There are no good guys here.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 2 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Trump's VPN is unlikely to help promote the Palestinian people's rights.

The person I was responding to made a statement that Europe doesn't violate free speech and only regulates hate speech, and I was pointing out that is bullshit, and the article says it was bullshit.

I definitely wouldn't trust the administration's vpn no, they are the enemy, for all of the faults of ze Germans and assorted europeans, the administration is the fucking devil.

[–] notsosure@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Which 14k things? That’s pretty obscure. Don’t fall for trumps propaganda; like in the USA (and many many other countries) hamas is a labeled a terrorist organization, and like in the USA, anti-semitism isnt allowed in most EU countries. Hate speech against minorities is actively removed, but if I open my front door and shout : the Israel government is killing Palestinians, nobody on Germany or the eu will prosecute me. Again, dont fall for trumps narrative, he’s a liar.

[–] hector@lemmy.today 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's in the linked article.

And Germany's laws are well known to be twisted to go after Israel protesters on bad faith as you should be well aware. Their system is shamelessly corrupted for the worst people in the world. And that's not a new thing either, from the Shah to now, Germany has suffered from bad politicians, and they are about to throw the entire republic to a far right by sucking so much worse every cycle, and that far right wing in league with the US and Russia will try and fix elections just as those countries are doing or planning on doing.

It’s a pity, you have locked yourself into a USA/Trump‘ narrative. Just come to Germany. I protest for Palestine, completely freely. Don’t fall for superficial propaganda it doesn’t pay off

[–] deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz 7 points 1 day ago

It's hardly a waste when your buddies are in on the grift and make bank.

Which kind of content? I live in Europe and I'm constantly encountering racist, sexist or violent content. What else could they offer?

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 3 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

Outright Nazi propaganda for the poor Europeans who haven't yet understood the supremacy of the white race. And injected ads for Trump-branded scams.
