Never ever played this game, but it keeps popping up in both my brain and my YouTube feed... So now is the time!

Im guessing from what i can see that the graphical version via steam is to be preferred, although the old school version has so much charm to me. Whats the consensus on these two versions?

And, as always, wish me luck ๐Ÿ’ซ

I've only played it in ASCII and only vanilla or self-modded. It's amazing out the box. The first time I played it back in 2008 I went sixteen hours straight without even realizing it, that's how immersive it was. And it's come a helluva long way in two decades.

Wait, 2008 wasn't two decad....

Well shit

Steam version has ~~all the new updates and features, it is what you'll want to choose. The og available from their website I believe is now depreciated since the stream launch but it is still a glorious piece of software~~ the new graphics set and ui which makes playing a lot more user friendly. You can still get texture packs for the og version but I would still recommend supporting the creators and buying the game.

This is not true; the latest version is still available for free from the Bay12 website, just without graphics so you have to play in ASCII mode.

Oh is that so? My mistake! I will edit my previous post. I thought I remembered that adventure mode and some other features were not coming to that version, but it appears I am mistaken. Thank you for the correction!

Yeah, makes sense! Ill give it a good spin and can't wait to unleash the dwarves on those poor mountains!

Another commenter corrected me that the bay12 version still is full featured but I definitely suggest getting the steam version for the graphics and ui alone. Definitely worth it in my opinion

For sure, will buy it!

The steam/itch version is simply better. It has graphics but you can turn them off and then is the same as the free online version.

I mean yo can download the free version and check it out but without graphics is a really tough game and the UI doesn't scale too good without the graphics. I 100% suggest to pick the premium version if you can :)

Am I the only one who wishes this game had better graphics? I know this originally used to be a text-based game and the GFX was recently updated, but it seems like it still has a long way to go.
