I have been Assadmaxxing for years, but it is important to note that he was giving speeches on epic Baathist third way-ism up until like a week before everything went to hell. His government's refusal to engage on a higher level with Russia and China was a major error. It was based on old school Cold War thinking about maintaining sovereignty.

He was better than the head chopping psycho america has "running" Syria now. He sure as hell wasn't a comrade. He fell for western leaders lies and assurances. He let the bourgeoisie push him around and foster corruption. Those mistakes built up over time and brought about his downfall.
He wasn't perfect but he was leading a nation under siege that had massive land borders. (Can you imagine how much harder it would have been for Castro or the Kims if they had thousands of km of land borders that the CIA could drive trucks over?)
The primary impediment to socialism is imperialism. So anyone who opposes Imperialism deserves support in that. Assad threw a wrench in obombers "pivot to Asia" and as such he was unwittingly lowering the pressure on socialist in China.
And what about that whole torture prison and him killing people myth (myth or not or exaggeration? )
Under Assad they killed separatists and isis because they were trying to destroy Syria with the help of the usa. They weren't massacring civilians and the chemical weapons thing was 100% a fabrication by the white helmets. Maybe they tortured some prisoners but they weren't running a torture factory like Abu Ghraib.
And how do I convince a fellow who thinks that Assad was massacring civilains and he killed protestors and all that stuff commonly said about him?
You ask him "Who told you all these bad things about Assad? Was it by chance the news outlets who insist there is no genocide in Gaza? Were they quoting the same anonymous western intelligence sources who swore there were WMDs in Iraq? Was it some NED funded "NGO" that is now demanding usa bomb Iran for no reason and making up ridiculous lies about 35,000 civilians being killed in 2 days of protests? All the empire does is lie to start wars. All your sources are suspect"
(If they believe the Iran death toll remind them that the official count in Gaza is 70,000 in 2 years of indiscriminate bombing and starvation and driving tanks over people. If they think Iran's police, who don't carry guns, can do in 2 days half of what the combined might of the usa and idf can do in 2 years they are beyond reasonable argument.)
