I already made this post a year ago, and indeed: Sync has been left to die, and we have been scammed.

Please give Sync a bad rating so unsuspecting users don't use, or even worse buy, an abandoned app.

Yeah this sucks. Loved the dev and the app back on reddit. I paid to remove ads and never had another update. Fucking sucks. I wish he would at least say something!

Still using sync daily lol, am I missing out on features of other clients? Any ones with as good of design as sync?

Summit for Lemmy is the closest feature-wise and is updated super regularly. Amazing dev

[–] dditty@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 7 hours ago

I switched to Summit a long time ago and haven't looked back. I just updated my review to 1 star. Thanks for the reminder!

Done.

Very unfortunate it has come to this but zero communication might be the biggest slap in the face. I'm glad the work from the developer was such high quality over the years (from Reddit to here) and I do not regret spending money on this app, including the absurd pricing for the Lemmy version .... but for the app to be abandoned without any communication feels bad man.

At very least just say something. Oh well. I hope they are doing well and are healthy at least. There are bigger things in life than stuff like this. But in the future, I hope developers in general can just say if they are going to abandon an app or not.

I started off on Sync, used it on Reddit, paid for it. Was so happy to hear when he was supporting Lemmy and paid for it again.

Sadly since then I have switched to Voyager after a few times went by with no updates. Hope he’s okay, but a little communication would have gone a long way.

I think the whole Reddit thing destroyed him.

He was super passionate about sync for Reddit but lost all interest after the great Reddit rug pull

Done

I switched to boost a year or so ago and have been happy with it

[–] FooBarrington@lemmy.world 21 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Boost is a great option! I've personally switched to Summit, but we're really lucky to have many great app options available on Android.

[–] BallShapedMan@lemmy.world 7 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Awesome! Summit is new to me, I'll give it a go.

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 6 points 12 hours ago

Summit is by far my favourite too. Boost is nice but for me I can't live without swipe gestures anymore. Let's you remove a bunch of buttons and makes the interface so much cleaner.

[–] MrQuallzin@lemmy.world 7 points 12 hours ago

Done, should have done that a lot sooner. Also make sure to go into the reviews and mark ones calling out the abandonment as helpful to boost them.

What exactly is so bad about sync and what makes the others better? I'm not trying to be a jackass I've heard this before but I've never really understood it. I started on a couple of apps like I think probably jerboa and Voyager when they first came out and they were kind of buggy. Sync came out and it worked better than the others.

So what am I being a fool about please educate me, are we just giving it bad reviews cuz it's not updated and seemingly poor as hell communication by the creator?

[–] FooBarrington@lemmy.world 7 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

The Lemmy API has started to change, causing some features to not properly work anymore (e.g. Marking as Read hasn't been properly working for months) and some content to become inaccessible (some posts and some comments just don't load anymore, especially noticeable with "error 17").

That's not to mention that new features simply won't be available, e.g. all the new stuff mentioned in the last release notes.

[–] hateisreality@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

Time to switch then

[–] DaPorkchop_@lemmy.ml 8 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

A lot of people paid money for it, only for the dev to go AWOL pretty soon afterwards. Most people probably wouldn't mind him abandoning the project, except for the fact that they paid a subscription (or a large one-off payment), only to get abandoned without any communication at all.

[–] hateisreality@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I paid too, but I mean it does work.

I get your point though

[–] DaPorkchop_@lemmy.ml 1 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

I kept using it until about two months ago, when votes stopped showing (presumably due to some API change), but there were plenty of minor things before that - for example, it stopped being able to save images almost a year ago.

[–] hateisreality@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

That's odd I can still save images..

[–] Anarki_@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 12 hours ago

Thanks for the heads-up. Switched from 5 stars to 1 star.
