Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

I've never been into Mecha, guns and the like, but relly like all of fromsofts titles I've tried in the soulsborne catalogue. Yesterdays thread about soulslike fatigue got me thinking in the other big franchise by FS.

So have you played it? What do you think of it? Is there something to love here for a soulsborne fan?

Only played AC6, but itwas my GotY, no doubt. Stupid fun gameplay and a faaaaascinating story.

I can't stand them ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Fires was the first armored core or even mecha game I had played outside of arcade chair type operations, and I was absolutely blown away. For a game with so few interactions they are quite meaningful, the exploration is definitely hobbled by the mission based gameplay but it's still got secrets. playing an ultralight Schneider build with dual shotguns definitely scratched the degenerate dex build itch in my skull pudding.

Plus unique gameplay elements into NG+3? What is this dark souls 2.5?

Oh! Sounds intriguing, thanks!

I have only ever played 2 armored core games.

AC2 and AC6.

Both are badass. The only other mech series I like is Mech Warrior. Like the OG Mech Warriors, not the MechAssault shit.

I've played a bit of Mechwarrior 5 (Mercs, not Clans) and really enjoyed it. Well, enjoyed the mech combat; I found the story and dialogue around it to be best skipped by as quickly as possible

I played AC when it was out on ps1 and 2, they were favorite game. I actually got into souls games once I realized it was the same company. I used to play Tenshu games as well, and it never registered they were all the same company.

I love AC6, I got the platinum /100% on ps4 and 5. It is remarkably similar to souls gameplay mechanics, especially the stagger/overload. But like insanely fast paced and frantic. There are many build options, although with PvP last I checked was pretty dead and the meta seemed a little stale. But single player is fantastic.

The frantic pase does sound a tad intimidating but knowing there are simmilarities to soulslike mechanics is reasuring.

There's always the option to just tank up. The tank can actually be quite mobile as well. Have fun!

I haven't played it, but it seems pretty cool. I like my mech stuff, but I tend to like heavier and more grounded mechs. Armoured Core gameplay seems more like Ace Combat than Mechwarrior. Like... why do they even have legs? Certainly not for walking

[โ€“] TheOakTree@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

The legs are for dropkicking the enemy mech at nearly Mach 1.

Also certain legs give you a higher initial jump height, which complements good boosters. Or you can just get rid of the legs and have tank treads.

The don't use them??? Lol, gotta respect FS commitment to .หณยทห– aesthetics ห–ยทหณ.

So good. It's surprising the amount of drama that can happen without any visible humans on screen.

From's hard numbers approach to player mechanics really makes these better than most mech games. Playing them involves a lot of experimenting and reading charts, then you end up expressing yourself through all those mechanics in interesting ways.

Also you get to paint the robots ๐Ÿ˜€

[โ€“] GrantUsEyes@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Painting and drama? Right up my alley then!

I played 1 and 2 waaay back in the day when people still rented video games. Own 6 and have played maybe 10 minutes to make sure my PC can handle it. Will be going back for a proper playthrough at some point.

I think they're great, and I'm glad that FS has something a little different going on.

I vastly prefer the Armored Core games to Dark Souls, but I like them both a great deal.

I would strongly recommend Armored Core, though some of the older titles are tricky to play these days and show their age.

Very enjoyable game. ๐Ÿ’ฏ with your time.
