It is not a referendum on joining the EU! Just on whether the negotiations should continue. The aim is to add democratic legitimacy to the process.

Good clarification.
So basically it‘s actually questioning the EU membership. With a referendum. Now, where have I seen this before…?
In any case a referendum exposes a nation to foreign interference in this age of information. It allows bad actors to focus their propaganda networks on a single issue for a very short time with great efficiency. That‘s how they got the Brits.
Not really. It is just, do we want to proceed yes/no. Of course adversaries can try to influence this. But a democracy has to be able to deal with that.
That‘s what the labour party thought when started the referendum. But as we know things turned out very differently. It was a catastrophe for the party and a serious blow to democracy. It’s not that hard, really. You either have a representative democracy or you don’t. But holding referendums over topics that are obviously targeted by Russian propaganda is malpractice. We can‘t be this naive about things anymore.

Labour didn't start the referendum, that was on the Tories.
