It’s like that here too and it’s shit.

Everyone I know is burning out and asking me to help them find a new job.

[–] MichaelScotch@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Could you help me find a new job too?

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Unfortunately probably not.

I’ve been doing resume reviews, mock interviews, and making coding tests for friends but I can’t do that anonymously for strangers.

If you have something you want me to look over I can, I just probably can’t help with the other stuff.

I wasn’t being serious, just making a joke. But I appreciate what you for friends. We have to keep helping each other wherever we can

I don’t need help finding a job, but I do need some advice. I have a structured settlement and I need cash now. What should I do?

What about taxes? Can you help me do my taxes? I'm trying to do it myself, but it's asking me to fill in the lines from Schedule II, and I don't know what that is! My numbers add up, and either my refund is 42 billion dollars, or $0. In either event, I fear I've screwed this up.

At least China has universal healthcare

[–] spectrums_coherence@piefed.social 16 points 1 week ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

No they don't. They have state provided health care, supplemented with private options.

But they are not universal in the sense that (1) not the entire population is covered (although almost everyone is) (2) health care is not close to free for most people.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_health_care_by_country#China

There is literally a hit movie couple years ago about the difficulty to obtain affordable Imatinib: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dying_to_Survive

(Imatinib was later covered by state health care package because of this movie

Damn I had no idea. My in-laws were considering to move to China (they're originally from HK) and I had assumed it's because the healthcare/elderly care was better there than in Canada, but maybe not?

[–] spectrums_coherence@piefed.social 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

I should specify I am referring to mainland China. Hong Kong has a different health care systems, and the health care is usually considered reasonably affordable for residents (could be because people in Hong Kong are generally more wealthy than most of mainland China)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Healthcare_in_Hong_Kong

I want to add China's healthcare is still reasonably affordable for many people living and working in cities.

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago

My understanding is they do not.

Which is kind of the worst of both worlds.

[–] tidderuuf@lemmy.world 33 points 1 week ago

I'm shocked. With how much astroturfing has been going on I thought China was this utopia of freedom and economic success with no worries.

[–] THE_GR8_MIKE@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Thank fucking christ I work a job where you have to physically go places to do the work.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Back to the mines, slave!

[–] greyscale 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Eventually they'll just make you pilot one of those robot dogs around site and swap out modules on big slide-out cassettes because its cheaper to have someone in thailand swap out an AC compressor at some datacenter somewhere.

[–] THE_GR8_MIKE@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Tbh, I'd do that. I already want one of those RC snow blowers. Mount a camera to it and I can sit inside and plow my driveway for 18 hours, but at least it'd be kinda fun.

I’m freelance, and AI can’t do my job yet…

But I’m sure it will be able to one day.

im aware of certain companies as well behind the scenes doubling down on ai workload very recently as well, so China definitely isnt alone on that front.
