[–] foggy@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

Holy shit I know two of those songs.

What "it" is has officially changed. 👴

It'll happen to you!

[–] jpreston2005@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago

[–] Quexotic@infosec.pub 2 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Does it mean that I'm old if the only song on this list that I recognized was yellow by Coldplay?

[–] Redfox8@mander.xyz 2 points 4 days ago

Right there with you! I was kinda hoping that I could say I'd not heard any of those songs...so close!

[–] BigBananaDealer@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

yes, no other song here is older than 2013

[–] toomanypancakes@crazypeople.online 10 points 6 days ago (4 children)

This is fascinating to me, I've only heard one of these songs before :o

[–] farmgineer@nord.pub 11 points 6 days ago

I've only heard of 3-4. I'm sure I've heard more just out in the wild if they're that popular, but I never know what a song is or who sings it.

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

I used to be with it! Then they changed what "it" was!

It'll happen to you...

[–] Efflixi@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I too have only heard one song on this list. But I was born more than 4 decades ago so....

[–] Nycto@lemmy.world 0 points 6 days ago (1 children)

It sounds to me like you've made a choice somewhere in your 4 decades to not seek out music that's new or popular. Maybe you have niche tastes or something, your reasons are your own. If you are happy with the music you listen to then you've made the right decision for you. In that case though, this list should not surprise you.

[–] Efflixi@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

Not exactly niche tastes for sure. I enjoy listening to almost any genre (seriously, even country). But the rapid commercialization and repetitiveness of most modern music (in any genre) is really off-putting. I do listen to current music but while it's not super niche, it'd also never end up on a list like this.

I'm not one of those people who only listens to indie bands and thinks I'm superior. Last week I listened to everything Pink Floyd ever released. :D The week before that it was all swedish power metal.

One more than i have. TIL post Malone does music. I thought he was a steamer or something.

[–] warm@kbin.earth 6 points 5 days ago

Never even heard of most of these lmao

[–] Mr_Wobble@thelemmy.club 4 points 5 days ago

I like that this graph is colored bright green, because as a 50 year old this list is pure kryptonite. Played back to back, this playlist would result in a Scanners-like situation for me.

[–] Cocodapuf@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

Yellow by Coldplay?!

What?

That's (yikes) 26 years old! How is that making the chart?

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.cafe 1 points 5 days ago

I'm an absolute expert in music up until about 2000, and then it falls off a cliff.

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 1 points 5 days ago

Surprised to see glass animals on this list. Didnt realise they were so big.

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

What were they streaming Yellow on in the year 2000? The radio? Napster? Lol how did Spotify get the data? It wouldnt be around until like 2008.

[–] purplemonkeymad@programming.dev 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That's when it was released, not the year everyone streamed it.

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 1 points 4 days ago

Aaah thank you

[–] chocrates@piefed.world 1 points 5 days ago

Tough to see imagine dragons so high on the list. Interesting that the weeknd has 2 in the top 4!
