Trans queens, queen is most powerful piece, king weakest. WOKE

[–] exasperation@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Might not be trans if all the other pieces are women too, which would be woke but in a different way.

[–] hypnicjerk@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

everyone knows the pawn industry exploits women

That's even more woke!!

[–] hOrni@lemmy.world 25 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Like musk said, only 64 squares, not fog of war, too easy.

[–] 9point6@lemmy.world 35 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I would easily believe musk has lost every game of chess he's ever played

[–] RamenJunkie@midwest.social 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

He refuses to use the queen at all because he doesn't believe women can have power and using the Queen would be "woke".

[–] hOrni@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Do You think he would play white, because they are white or black because they are the colour of SS uniforms?

[–] Speculater@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

There are more ways a chess game can go than there atoms in the universe... He's a fool.

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 14 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Polytopia solves this.

(Okay actually I don't like Chess because too much of the game is memorising openings. The game is only fun if you suck or if you're already a grandmaster. All the in between parts are unfun. That's why I prefer Go.)

It’s called Go Fish, not Go - that’s a programming language.

[–] RustySharp@programming.dev 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Am I being wooshed here? Aren't Go and Go Fish two completely different games?

[–] hessenjunge@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

You’re both right and being wooshed. (And maybe missed you that Go is also the name of a programming language?)

I'm 1600 fide and have yet to see a game actually be decided by someone memorising openings

[–] TwoTiredMice@feddit.dk 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

At 1600 you might have moved above those who play that way. I've played a bit in the past and I reached 1200 and it seemed like opponents really relied on their openings. If I recognised their opening and played a completely random move they did not know what to do.

[–] Kanda@reddthat.com 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Openings are very hyped because "crush xyz in 12 moves" is a really good sell. "Do the hard work and you'll actually improve after like months or years if you do it consistently" is not such a good sell.

And so every new player studies a lot of openings, gets a theoretical grandmaster position (yay, you're equal as Black) and then blunder a piece and lose anyway.

[–] AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You've never gotten into a better or worse position cuz someone knew an opening trap and the other person did not? GM's fall for that shit every so often so you must not play a lot of chess or something.

[–] Kanda@reddthat.com 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Of course it's happened, but saying it's because of the opening is not correct. It's because I didn't calculate well and my other skills were not good enough. In very fast time controls it can give you a big edge if you're good at memorization, but most opening lines work only in very specific circumstances and you can play maaany games before you see it.

Fairly often one player will be in a position where they are more comfortable in intermediate games, but the game is far from over.

Weaker players sometimes fall apart entirely in the opening, but unless you're in the market for the world champion title, there's absolutely no need to memorize openings. Games are decided either by simple tactics or endgame knowledge more than anything at the lower levels.

I liked Battle Chess back in the day because it had chess rules but made the capturing of squares more exciting.

Battle Chess

So, at least it got a graphics upgrade after about 1500 years. But, I got tired of it because still, it's just chess. There's no random element, every game starts the same way. Other games like poker are also largely skill based games, but at least each game starts differently.

[–] smeenz@lemmy.nz 2 points 2 days ago

Oh my god, you just reminded me of the pc bleeper digitised sound bites that battle chess played on PC back in the day when the pieces were taken

[–] saltnotsugar@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

The pawns can only advance? What is this, a banzai charge?

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

Well then git gud.

[–] BowtiesAreCool@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

The last major rules update for chess was only in the 19th century. Plus minor rules are updated all the time

[–] Sirdubdee@piefed.social 4 points 2 days ago

Skill issue

[–] BeigeAgenda@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 days ago

And the queen is too OP, with no QOL improvements the last 1000 years.

Nerf Knights, Buff Bishops.
