Hey everyone, I noticed some weird things on the world map in Fallout 4 that completely contradict the lore:

  • US and Canada: Why are they still divided by a border? According to the lore, the US fully annexed Canada in 2076 after years of occupation.

  • USSR vs. Russia/CIS: Why do we see the modern borders of the Russian Federation and CIS countries instead of the Soviet Union? In the Fallout universe, the USSR never dissolved and lasted until the Great War of 2077.

  • The Mediterranean Sea: And most importantly, what happened to the Mediterranean? It's filled with the same green color as the land, just like the Black, Caspian, and Baltic seas. Could the Atlantropa project have been implemented in the Fallout timeline?

Is there an in-game lore explanation for this? Or is it just lazy developers?

Actual lore explanation:

they flood filled it

I agree with others that this probably just laziness on Bethesda’s part.

But to give some benefit of the doubt, where did you find this map? Where it is located, in game, can give some information on that. Like, if this was in some very prewar bunker, then maybe we can give some explanation like this is before the US annexation, for example.

Federal Surveillance Center K-21B

The Brotherhood of Steel are such assholes. I'm exploring this bunker, finally reach the bottom, and find a terminal to look up the lore and history of this place, only to see... 'DATA EXPUNGED. Ad Victoriam.'

I am 100℅ sure nobody gave a thought, they just put the first sepia map on there

There is a weird pair of islands to the bottom right of Australia.

New Zealand?

Before looking it up, I could excuse that a few land masses resurfaced after the ocean got cooked a little

Some things I have noticed.

It looks like the Red Sea is also filled in.

It appears that other areas at the north of Europe have had some areas filled.

Sri Lanka now appears to have a land bridge to India.

Lake Victoria and Lake Malawi are both also filled in.

Sudan and South Sudan are just one country, which makes sense given that change was only recognised in 2011.

Great Lakes? No. Independent states? Yes.

[–] scholar@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

It's possible that whoever owned this map hadn't updated it after Canada was annexed. The rest is more difficult to explain away.

It's because Bethesda doesn't give a crap about Fallout, the whole game is basically a post-apocalyptic theme park.

RIP Hawai'i.

And the Mediterranean has become ... terrainean.

There is though. It has merely shrunk.
