Thinking about the implications of that axe handle being conscious.. Did every piece of Barbara become its own complete Barbara? Every axe handle, every match, every splinter? Or is there a consciousness center that just so happened to be located in that particular piece of Barbara? And why doesn't killing the tree kill the consciousness?
What does it mean for Rudy? Will he be split in two, one stump-rudy and one fallen-tree Rudy? What is he afraid of if he knows his consciousness can't be killed?
A tree has many years to come to grips with itself, but can be felled in a moment. Rudy may still live many lives, but each of those lives are at the behest of the logger. Will he burn as firewood, Will he too become the handle of a tool, will he lay the frame to a concrete pour? Perhaps all three, perhaps none.
But Rudy doesn't know, he can only speculate on the horror of the moment and its future, and pray it is better than what it once was
