I loved this game but stopped playing it since although I never shoot to somebody for anything but defend myself, there was always a high chance of someone shooting you in the back after pretending to be friendly, is this still the case?

the matchmaking got updated to have friendlier players get matched up more with friendly people, but the risk of having bad people in the game is still there. for example, defending yourself when you were shot at first no longer counts against you.

personally, I always try to engage with my mic to see what they say and de-escalate any potentially violent situation. if someone doesn't respond, I know it's game-on and let them know I'm shooting on sight lol.

it works the majority of times for me, I'm happy playing this way

Happens sometimes but mostly no, it's especially rare if you're a friendly player as you'll be matched against other friendly players.
