There are a huge number of people in the UK who are transphobic, but under the impression that they hold a centre-ground science-backed opinion just because they acknowledge that some trans people might exist, even if they don't think they should have any rights. If enough of that kind of person ends up in a newsroom, they're obviously going to end up publishing a lot of transphobic articles, and they're going to uncritically repeat the claims of transphobic campaigners as they'll think they're just quoting claims of fact. The pro-trans campaigners don't have to be quoted, though, because they're just hurling unjustifiable insults when they say things are transphobic, which is 'obviously' much worse than anything any gender-critical person might have done, and doesn't warrant publication.
I don't know how we convince these people to re-examine their position just in case they've accidentally been horribly transphobic for years, as any hint of a suggestion that they might be a smidge transphobic is received like you'd claimed they'd been campaigning to reopen Auschwitz, so everything gets treated as if you're being ridiculous and tremendously insulting.
