From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

I'm currently using the COSMIC DE and been loving it so far. I have some experience in rust, so I want to try and make an app for cosmic (no guarantees).

Any recommendations?

a nightlight is my biggest peeve with it. also the lack of tabs and more dolphinesque features in its file browser. would be great to have file previews for less common files like .stls. runs great otherwise

i also think something like spectacle for kde but for cosmic would be fantastic, frankly spectacle is close to best in class. only competition it has is probably google's android assistant with circle to search and other convenience features of that nature. and of course sharex on windows.

ive been considering writing up some accessibility software for cosmic, mostly stuff like screen readers, local llm based screen explainers (describes images automatically to a blind user) etc.

an image viewer with the feature set and workflow of irfanview on windows.

a cool and simple idea that is still missing for cosmic is an emoji selector

check cosmic-utils to make sure you're not recreating a project that already exists.

edit: there is actually a archived emoji selector project. Also there are more projects listed here

Doesn't cosmic files already support this feature?

Right-click -> Show details -> Open with

sure, but only for that one event, it doesn't let you persist the preference from there

I found this completely maddening when I had a folder full of random videos with various codecs. I had a video player installed that could handle all of them but half of them would open in one video player, a few in another and the rest tried to open in a web browser and failed.

Damn, I dont even know how to do this without KDE XD

Even rox-filer from 1999 had an easy way to do this!

Could you potentially port Hexchat to Cosmic?

Is there a slide down terminal like guake yet?

[–] magikmw@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago

Good one, I've had a terminal like that at some quick shortcut since 2011. Absolute must for me.

I usually don’t mind using apps made for another DE as long as their UIs are minimal enough for my taste

however, while I was using COSMIC I felt like it really needed a GUI Log Viewer, it’s the kind of thing that sound clearly tailored for the user base COSMIC aims to achieve

GNOME one is nice, but libcosmic apps handle COSMIC tiling better

Not really an app, but a way to easily display HEIC pictures, even in preview mode like with Gnome Sushi.

Only thing bothering me on the cosmic desktop is really the fact that the app menu doesn't have a shadow behind its window. So white menu on white window on the back, you can't see where one window starts and where the other ends. A patch for that would be great, to be honest.

Lol KDE has this included like a normal desktop

But yes a good clipboard manager please

I've not tried it in a while, do they have infinite horizontal tiling?
