Because gamers will keep buying their crap.

No one gave a shit when Nintendo did its digital game key shit on the Switch 2. People will keep buying PS5 games.

The moral outrage is just that. Morally aligned. A company without morals gives zero fucks about moral outrage.

We need a capitalism outrage for this to matter.

then those idiots get what they deserve. i wish i could boycot harder but i havent bought a console or console game in a decade, and likely never will again the way things are going.

I think people cared less about Nintendo's case because they allow 3rd parties to make physical games that are just a digital key, but they won't release any first party games that way. (Not exactly convinced they won't eventually change this policy, but that's what it is right now)

What they want is software as a service. They want to end game ownership entirely and push gamers into a mandatory subscription. They want to have all games in a catalog like a streaming service that you download to your console to play. They want to sell extra access passes for new and popular games.

They want gamers to pay for a $1,000+ console, subscribe to a $20+ a month game library and $40 passes for new games that have not yet been released to the library. They want gamers to pay for online access as well and want the ability to brick a console for cheating, modification, piracy, or user account bans.

They will succeed too. Gamers make a bunch of noise, but it's all sound and fury signifying nothing. They won't boycott or protest. They will make a bunch of angry memes, write a few articles, spend some time on social media like reddit or lemmy that they would never admit is social media, and then fight scalpers and crowds to get one.

They will succeed too.

Maybe, except their games will get more and more shit, and there's plenty of alternatives in terms of games to play.

Maybe I'm too cynical, but it doesn't really matter. Bad games, verification cans, whatever they don't really matter. Gamers are a consumer population. They will make a lot of noise but as long as they continue to consume nothing will change and the enshitification machine will continue to churn.

And they will fucking buy them.

Gamers are weak willed and easily manipulated. Look at what they (bannon) accomplished through world of Warcraft. Look at gamer gate! 5 people pushed that lie and gamers carried it into every fucking space for them. They are good dogs for the right wing. They think buying a game from a shitty company on sale is a protest. We should make fun of them more for their lack of self respect.

That's why I pirate unless it's DRM free and doesn't require an internet connection after downloading the installer.

because what you buy is what you support. and a lot of people support this shit. Buying stuff from companies should be viewed as sign of endorsement of their actions.

New Text
Document

[–] cockmushroom@reddthat.com 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Because they won't be forced to lower the sale pricenin proportion with the lowered production cost.

We sold our futures for magic beans when we decided it was "fair" for a store to charge paying customers extra to cover losses incurred from theft.

[–] DdCno1@beehaw.org 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Development costs are much bigger of an issue than production costs. Physical media disappearing changes nothing about this.

[–] cockmushroom@reddthat.com 1 points 1 week ago

Since you seem to need someone to spell it out for you: the point is that they're doing it because they won't be charging any less. And you're almost right; devopment costs don't affect production costs very much at all.

[–] actualaccount@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 week ago

I always see the New Text Document in this meme. It adds authenticity.

You don't need to do anything to "turn your physical game into a digital one", because the same package you deliver for a physical game to 1st parties are used the same way for digital downloads.

[–] architect@thelemmy.club 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Games going digital is not a fucking dystopia. Jesus Christ there are people being killed and put in jail for moving a box. Get a fucking grip and quit fucking buying their garbage.

[–] redparadise@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago

Agreed, going digital is not a dystopia, but then revoking the games you "bought" is indeed dystopia, these companies have digital games with DRM that only work as long as they give you permission to use, that's the dystopian part where you own nothing and be happy, I personally prefer digital, but when I can actually own it and not be locked out of what I buy.
