  • I made a Piefed* account, but I can't see the comments and posts from my Lemmy account. Or vice versa. What's up with that? Is there a "wall" between these communities?
  • Is there a way to transfer posts etc from one account to another?

  1. I assume you mean Piefed.
  2. Are you talking about your @Zarobi@quokk.au PyLova account?
  3. Lemmy -> Piefed/PyLova works by ActivityPub. Piefed & PyLova largely follow the same “threadiverse” conventions as Lemmy, because they are clones of Lemmy.
  4. I don’t know why you can’t see comments or posts from your Lemmy account. It may be for one of a few reasons. The instances may not be federated with each other, or the Piefed/PyLove instance may be newer than the comments & posts you’re looking for, so it doesn’t have a copy of them.

Oh yes sorry, I have dyslexia and I read it as pieface LOL how embarrassing

Yeah my accounts are:

It seems like these instances maybe just don't talk to each other?

[–] davel@lemmy.ml 0 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

It appears that they do talk to each other:

This works: https://aussie.zone/u/Zarobi@quokk.au
but this doesn’t, and I don’t know why: https://quokk.au/u/Zarobi@aussie.zone

I don’t know why that doesn’t work when this does: https://quokk.au/u/davel@lemmy.ml
Perhaps it’s because none of your Zarobi@aussie.zone comments or posts have ever federated to quokk.au, so quokk.au isn’t aware of user Zarobi@aussie.zone’s existence yet. You could try subscribing to or commenting in a quokk.au community; maybe that would “prime the pump.”

Yeah it's extremely weird… but I'm getting the feeling that these "instances" are kind of their own servers that are "friends"and subscribed with other servers? So maybe one of them refreshes more often than the other, or some friendships are one-way… That's just how I'm interpreting it based on all the info you gave me anyway

[–] tofu@lemmy.nocturnal.garden 3 points 13 hours ago

They don't refresh at all, posts and comments get delivered to subscribed instances when they are created. Likely no one from your Piefed instance has been subscribing to the communities you posted to with your lemmy account at that time.

ActivityPub federation is very complicated, and I don’t have a full understanding of it myself. I’ve never come across a situation like this one before, where a user on one instance appears to not exist at all from the viewpoint of another instance that’s federated with it.

I do know that, compared to Lemmy, Piefed is buggy, and PyLova, as a soft fork of Piefed, presumably is buggy as well. You might try asking in a Piefed/PyLova support community. Maybe they’ve encountered this before.

Yeah it seems very complicated. I think I'll stick to my Lemmy account for now, it has all my post history and stuff as well. I might retry Piefed again after a while to see if it works better, my account will be waiting for me. Thanks for the help!

into which lemmy.world community did you post from piefed.social?

[–] Zarobi@quokk.au 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Just notifying that I answered in the other comment on this post (didn't want to double up the same info)

[–] Zarobi@quokk.au 0 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Yes I can't see that from my Lemmy account, nor this post

[–] originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com 1 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

i dont even use lemmy and i can see it, so, its clearly federating.

[–] Zarobi@quokk.au 0 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

not all systems directly federate with each other... i seem to recall some bad blood between lemmy.world and lemmy.ml.. so posts made on one might not make it to the other regardless of your home server. no idea if thats still the case

its where the community is hosted that really matters, in the case of that last post 'Technology @ lemmy.world'

so any servers that purposefully block lemmy.world would not receive the post
