You can faintly see his thumb under the armrest. I think it's just a weird angle, and the pinky hanging off doesn't do any favors
It looks like he's looking down into a bus window. What vehicle would be so close to that ground that someone in a wheelchair would be looking down into.

That looks like his pinky to me. His left thumb is right here.
You can also see a ring on his ring finger, so that tracks with the pinky.
You may be right. I guess I hadn't looked closely enough.
It still doesn't rule it out admittedly, but yeah, I think it's just a weird angle either way. I did some searching for "professor X finds someone in overturned car", and "James McAvoy wheelchair behind the scenes" to try to find the shot, but I haven't had any luck.
edit: the smile does seem a bit perfect. It could even be a normal shot where someone just edited the expression. AI investigating is starting to feel like a losing battle.
Pull the meta data off the picture. If it was AI generated it will either say so or it will be entirely empty. Either one is as good as an admission.
