Volkswagen chose not to develop a modern electric Beetle, leaving the door open for Chinese automakers to reinvent the iconic compact car with affordable EV technology and retro-inspired styling. The shift highlights how China's EV industry is rapidly filling market gaps that legacy brands have overlooked.

You'd think a car with New Beetle aesthetics but electric would move units, a bit like the electric minis out there. But VW are trying to become the biggest car company in the world and I'm just a guy

Originally it was "exclusively" marketed towards women with:

  • a "lady driving mode"
  • a dashboard selfie camera
  • a heating mode for when someone's on their period

They've rebranded it, removed the bizarre features and upped some specs, albeit still quite expensive and heavy. But WHAT WERE THEY THINKING avgn-horror

There was the Dodge La Femme back in the fifties, it had a lipstick holder, came in an exclusive pretty pink color, had upholstery done in tapestry, and it included a matching purse and raincoat.

There was also the Volvo YCC, Your Concept Car, in early 2000's. It had a completely sealed engine compartment, so gals didn't need to get their hands grimey. It was intended to go 50,000km between oil changes. It had run flat tires. It had the equivalent of Teflon infused paint to make cleaning the car easy; dirt can't stick to the surfaces.

what bizarre marketing. a heated seat is nice for everyone, period or not.

Eh.

Bugs were what they were for their simplicity. Their owners manual included steps for push starting it if you had a dead battery. They used air pressure from their spare tire to pressurize the windshield sprayer reservoir. They used an optional swamp cooler for air conditioning. They could float they were so light. The motors could be dropped by disconnecting 4 bolts, brakes and power cables and walking the body over the motor.

This car is none of those things. It is not simple. It is not push startable. It is cheaper but not cheap. It's heavy. This is a nostalgia glasses car marketed to people who have never even owned a bug. Not to mention it's ugly as fuck. I've owned several type 1s, type 2, a type 3 and a Thing. This ain't blowing my skirt up.

'Better' is doing some real heavy lifting here. There's probably a reason beyond profit motive for not making an electric beetle.
