I really want James Hoffmann to watch me make my morning coffee, with a 10yr old basic espresso machine that was only bought because it was on sale, and has had 100s of citric acid flushes virtually dissolve the inner workings.

I want to see him wince as I load a full hopper of Costco’s ‘cheapest this week’ beans into my grinder, that was on sale and kinda matched the colour of the coffee machine, and grind them at the medium setting because meh!

Use the double ended plastic scoop and tamp which came with the machine, to load it sloppily into the basket with a single high pressure hole underneath. Press the go button with the water that’s been sitting the machine since Friday.

Finally I let the water just run through the coffee as I blast past espresso and lungo to make a full mug with just enough room for a splash of milk, and maybe some flavoured syrup.

Perfect!

I love coffee and this made me laugh--because there are some who take this stuff way too seriously and try to even gatekeep enjoying coffee or castigate others for not making it as large of a production in their lives. Props to people who try to help others understand the depth in an area though.

I recently found Lance Hendrick and been going through some of his older videos slowly. And sometimes watching new videos. I like how his newer guides also teach me the why with the how. I don't remember which video it was, but he wanted to make gu8de videos where he tries not to make "gospel"

Not saying that James didn't also do that, but finding more perspective really ignited my love for the coffee hobby, and I don't get too much FOMO for new gear.

Although I really do want a hario switch now after years with my aeropress. just to learn about pourovers now.

Exactly! I really like watching James and I’ve learned a lot, but I’m just not invested enough in my morning coffee to make to start weighing things out, and getting the perfect pour time.

Its really not that much extra fuss. There is middle ground between purposely brewing a terrible cup of coffee and fussing over the minute details of prepping a shot. It takes me 10 seconds to weigh my beans, 20s to grind, 20s to prep, 40s to brew, and hot water from a kettle. So apart from waiting for a kettle, it takes about a minute and a half.

Anyone can appreciate good coffee, but it takes a real coffee connoisseur to appreciate bad coffee.

I don’t even drink coffee and I firmly believe you should write horror stories

Thank you! Maybe a future career move.

You're grinding your own beans‽ Elitist!!

In my defence the grinder was on offer and I can’t pass up a bargain.

If it makes you feel any better I thought beans would be cheaper than ground coffee… they’re not! Turns out it’s cheaper to grind them down to half the size, vacuum pack them and ship them as bricks.

Wait, this reads like a joke or something. Is this not ok?

Are people really putting fresh water into their espresso machines each time?

I'd watch while pouring myself a glass of bottled Starbucks with some Fairlife lactose free chocolate milk tossed in. 🤷‍♂️
