With fossil giants continuing to endanger our very civilisation and governments cracking down on not them but on non-violent activists, what are they expecting to happen next?

It's been so long since there was an actual violent uprising in the western world that I think the ruling class actually believes that they're immune from the guillotines. Or they think that they've placated the population enough with social media so a violent uprising isn't possible.

They yearn for the guillotine

Nations are hell-bent on being on the wrong side of history I guess

We've had climate activists in court here (UK), where the judge has jailed them for mentioning climate change crisis as a defence. Fucking unreal. They cannot mention the reason why they committed their crimes.

She grows ever more powerful after each arrest.

Can't wait for her final form.

The documentary "I am Greta" shows one of her trips across the Atlantic Ocean in a solar-powered sailboat. It looked pretty scary tbh. She's already hard as nails.

Is this like an activist Zenkai Boost?

[-] silence7@slrpnk.net 11 points 1 year ago

Often. An arrest can generate a bunch of media attention, and bring in a new wave of activists.

Isn't that what happened after she was arrested in Germany (iirc)?

[-] PlasterAnalyst@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

If she gets hit with a serious charge it could prevent her from traveling to other countries.

[-] roguetrick@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago

The thumbnail for this on Kbin is Anakin Skywalker. This comment goes very well with that bug.

Are they fucking stupid? It seems like they're intentionally setting up a martyr.

I'm not disagreeing with her message at all, because I think she's 100% on the right track. I just can't see a scenario where someone approved that arrest, especially since she only got more popular after the last one.

Unless they're intentionally trying to boost her popularity, which would be nice.

What kind of government cracks down and arrests protesters? I think it starts with an F..

I'm sick of your constant Finland bashing!

Doesn't Finland not exist?

[-] silence7@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 year ago

Unlike some countries, it's actually on the map

Good Guy Cop*: Is forced to police and disperse environmental protest. Chooses to give protestors exactly what they wanted: more visibility.

*Really weird to write that, even in jest.

Well, cops in the UK are required to have extensive education and training, so it wouldn't be surprising for them to be intelligent enough to make that decision. It's not like the US where being smart disqualifies you from being a cop.

if you penalize non-violent protests, don't be surprised when infrastructure bombings or worse begin to occur...

Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:
