I, being someone who works with computers, have had some luck with most of my favorite subs being here already.

Despite that, some of my hobby ones still aren't here. NFL exists, but it's the same as nothing so far. Soccer I couldn't find at first, maybe today it already does? Also, no sign of fantasy football.

I also followed a bunch of History subs, but looks like most people in Lemmy only care about science and technology.

Tell us, what is missing for you?

Not really. It's incredibly frustrating and I've def lost some faith in humanity.

I thought /r/selfhosted would be ready to jump but everyone is like "but there's no users on lemmy" and "you'll split the community" and "we're going to go dark for two days - that will teach them!"

Consequently there's been no support for any single refuge.

Additionally people have set up several communities here with similar names in the past but now mods aren't responding so it's all a bit of a mess.

[-] TeaHands@lemmy.world 13 points 2 years ago

Idk which ones you've tried but I know there's !selfhosted@lemmy.world

As far as the "no single refuge" thing, I think that just comes with time as people decide "imma post in this one". Just pick one and go for it tbh.

Give it time, things are accelerating really quickly!

And for what it's worth, people who have turned their back on Reddit and are now here, probably aren't contributing much or at all to discussions on Reddit... So it'll seem to skew more to voices that aren't switching or haven't yet.

I'm missing witchesagainstthe patriarchy, mommit, and quilting. Everything else is here and I'm going to get more familiar this weekend and maybe start some groups

[-] JCSpark@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 year ago

I'd love to see WitchesAgainstThePatriarchy again! Looks like communities on Lemmy.ca are fairly easy to create. I'll play around with it for a bit and see what it's like.

I wish there was something like AskHistorians but I highly doubt I'll ever find something that good without a solid moderation team and very strict rules. Feels like it will either be Reddit (and fuck that to be honest) or nothing.

I still can go through rabbit holes on Wikipedia at least so there's that.

Yes but there's only 7 subscribers and I'm the only post :(

Then again it's a niche community about a fantasy series, I'm not surprised it doesn't have much going on yet.

They’re heeeeeeeere…

I’m really pleased by how many are starting anew on Lemmy. I giggled like a little kid when I saw HydroHomies was already up.

[-] Moonguide@lemmy.ml 18 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Not really. My most visited subs on reddit (fuck spez) were Rimworld, Zomboid, Hunt Showdown and various hobby/profession subs (graphic design, illustration, itap, photography). I'm fairly confident a UX/UI sub will pop up sooner rather than later considering how techie Lemmy's userbase seems to be. Iirc there is a gaming related comm on beehaw, but the odds those three games will be talked about is rather slim.

Edit: also, Swoleacceptance. Recently got back to the gym due to mental health. Was a gym rat years ago but life got in the way.

I just hope Lemmy becomes huge so niche things will start popping up, I miss specifc band and game subs like r/KGATLW and r/factorio for example. Though I have also found the searching of communities across instances to be somewhat unreliable. I'm also hoping for some good meme communities to flourish.

LGBTQ+ support spaces. Lemmy has some, but not enough.

[-] ArtVandelay@lemmy.world 18 points 2 years ago

I created mine at /c/guitars , I'm not sure if the reddit community at large will join though. I'm hesitant to push it anywhere, it feels like sleazy self promotion. I just wanna talk about my hobbies with other hobbyists, and leave all the corporate greed back at reddit.

I hate to say it but shitposts and circlejerks are a bit part of my reddit browsing to lighten the mood.

Otherwise, trash like terriblefacebookmemes and idiotsincars was great entertainment for some reason...

I don't know why I am like this.

Edit: to extend on this, seeing a post about some crazy shit play out and then reading everyone react to it is so much fun.

[-] bazongo@lemmy.world 13 points 2 years ago

It feels like the mods on the subreddits don't want to switch because that woul mean they might risk not being moderators anymore. Sad to see. Every sub should migrate. The only major thing that makes reddit unique is the awards and customizable avatars which no person over the age of 12 should care about.

[-] z2k_@lemmy.nz 13 points 2 years ago

For r/soccer there’s !soccer@lemmy.ml although I’m hoping !football@lemmy.ml takes off instead.

It doesn’t look like there’s enough sports related content so something like !sports@beehaw.org might have more engagement.

Tell us, what is missing for you?

Niche anime communities. So far, it's just Bocchi the Rock that has a separate community from the Anime community in lemmy.ml. I need my Re:Zero, KonoSuba, Kaguya-Sama, Classroom of the Elite, Call of the Night etc. I hope with more people coming in, it would been the flourishing of an entire anime ecosystem here in Reddit (probably one instance for anime solely?)

Most of my intrests are there and have some activity. Mainly the computerstuff and all. But others exist but aren't active. Take for example kpop, japanese music, horses, the elder scrolls. I wouldn't mind a community for western style RPGs as those are nearly the only games I play, with a few exeptions. General gaming ones seem too general for me, too little I care about.

I am trying to post here, but also don't want to spam a community with only my posts and make it looks like some kind of echo chamber. Feels like a delicate balance on the (nearly) inactive ones.

[-] StupidUselessHuman@lemmy.ml 11 points 2 years ago

Nope, not yet, unfortunately. The majority of them either hasn't migrated here yet, or has a low amount of subscribers. Hopefully, more of them starts migrating here soon.

The ones I frequently browse that I doubt will migrate here are probably r/characterai, r/choiceofgames, and r/hostedgames.

I haven't seen r/gamedeals and r/livestreamfail here yet, but their amount of subscribers is pretty high compared to the other subreddit I've listed, so I think they'll probably migrate here soon.

But at least the country I live in has made a community here already. The amount of subscribers is still pretty low, but some people in there have been making a few posts and comments recently, so hopefully it gets more active soon.

I'd like to have a logo edit / sbubby sub.

Also, some niche ones that aren't there yet (AFAIK):

buildapc : PC building help

SavageGarden / carnivorousplants: subs aimed towards tending bug-eating plants

hardwaregore / firmwaregore / softwaregore / technope : subs based around faulty hardware and firmware, sometimes destroyed hardware, or badly designed software

cablefail : pictures of bad cable management and the chaos of cabling in general

itsaunixsystem : sub based on overly fake or wrong tech in the media

PBSOD : faulty kiosks and such displaying error messages in the open

spicypillows / spicybricks : sub based on the pictures of swollen batteries of any kind, with the "bricks" being UPS batteries

dankpods / battrees : Australian youtuber who yells at several portable music gadgets and headphones, the battrees one being pictures of off-brand batteries, mostly PKCell batteries, but can also be several others as well.

techsupportmacgyver : instances of crazy fixes that ended up working

termux : sub for the Termux project

ITRage (likely a replacement for iiiiiiitttttttttttt) : information technology-related rage posts

headphones : not sure if there's a sub there for headphones and IEM related stuff so I guess there could be one.

justrolledintotheshop : automotive repair shop employee's findings when working on vehicles

Another, much more niche music, streaming and TV-related:

kpop : for Korean music news and updates, discussion (with objective viewpoint)

kdrama : news and updates about Korean drama series, reviews, discussion

kdramarecommends : recommendations for Korean drama series

trigger (or maybe studiotrigger) : discussion and updates on anime made by Studio Trigger

webtoons : webtoon series discussion

animemusic : sharing music featured in anime series

This all I could get from the top of my head currently.

Game-specific subreddits (i.e., LegendsofRuneterra, PathofChampions, CustomLoR, MagicArena, leagueoflegends, starcraft, Factorio, LastEpoch, ftlgame). Warframe@dormi.zone looks good.

Franchise-specific subreddits like Batman. !star_wars@lemmy.world looks good.

Entertainment (i.e., Showerthoughts, oddlysatisfying, interestingasfuck, DesignDesign, EngineeringPorn, OldSchoolCool).

Niche art (i.e., PixelArt, RetroFuturism, cassettefuturism, TheNightFeeling).

I expect the first two categories (where I commented most) to be the slowest to move here.
