It doesn't matter. I got off with just the teaser sample.

FS TAB - 3 syllables

F STAB - 2 syllables

The choice is clear.

[-] pineapplelover@lemm.ee 19 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

FSTAB (silent F) - 1 syllable

[-] SkyeHarith@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

Yes FS TAB.

Since when has Linux been about taking the easy way out?

[-] Innocent_Bystander@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I mean, it's literally shorthand already for filesystem table innit?

[-] pandarisu@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

We geeks do not care about syllables! We are the ones who "shortened" the 3 syllable "World Wide Web" to the 9 syllable "www"!

[-] ErwinLottemann@feddit.de 3 points 1 year ago

Still only 3 syllables in German 🤷

[-] irmoz@reddthat.com 2 points 1 year ago

"Dub dub dub" is 3 syllables

[-] andrew@lemmy.stuart.fun 7 points 1 year ago

By this logic we should just fuse the f and s for a monosyllabic word.

[-] adespoton@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

I just call it the filesystem table?

[-] nydas@lemmy.world 42 points 1 year ago

Filesystem Table.

It’s a shortening. Not a shortening of File Systemtable though.

[-] Andrew15_5@mander.xyz 23 points 1 year ago

Thanks for the information, but I started calling it f stab, an I shall continue to do so.

[-] bear@slrpnk.net 28 points 1 year ago

I literally didn't put it together that it was FS-Tab until a couple years ago when I was setting up an encrypted drive manually in /etc/crypttab, something I had done many times before, when it finally clicked.

I've used Linux heavily for about 15 years.

[-] agressivelyPassive@feddit.de 8 points 1 year ago

Same, mentally I called it f stab for years and it dawned on me after using Linux for well over ten years.

[-] backhdlp@lemmy.blahaj.zone 27 points 1 year ago

Reading this meme (a while ago) is how I found out it's not pronounced f stab

[-] trk@aussie.zone 12 points 1 year ago

Huh.... Been using Linux for 20 years, only just learned the origins of fstab.

How embarrassing.

[-] jeremoose@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

wow, it never occured to me that it meant file system table. I feel like fstabl would have made more sense then. although it probable would have just become "fuhstabul"

[-] dack@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

fuhstabul

Or is it constanstinobul?

[-] tryagain@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago

Fuhzantium?

[-] Synthead@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

This was decided at a time when single bytes for a file name was still valuable space. This is why vi is vi and not visual. UNIX is more than 50 years old :)

[-] cokane_88@lemmy.fmhy.ml 7 points 1 year ago

Wow whooshing sounds... Today I learned.

[-] Matcraftou@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

F I L E S Y S T E M T A B L E

[-] brad@toad.work 5 points 1 year ago

I just need it to be F STAB

[-] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Some people don't know any better.

Others know.

The rest are psychopaths.

[-] Grass@geddit.social 2 points 1 year ago
