Sorry I meant to say torrent client

I was incredibly stupid when writing this comment. I meant torrent client. Fixed it.

Not PeerTube, but still ActivityPub: The Linux Experiment uses CastoPod, an ActivityPub-based podcast platform for his Linux & Open Source News show

It is a PC. In fact, a good PC. It runs Linux. But it's better than a ordinary Linux PC, since it also has an amazing console UI that's actually fun to use with a gamepad. It's the best of both worlds, and it's build on top of FOSS software. It's excellent.

Maybe bring back Tesseract? Why was it shut down in the first place?

Another idea I had: Hosting our own Matrix instance? That way, every community could create their own spaces while being independent from matrix.org and not putting more stress on their already overloaded servers. Running a modern Matrix server implementation like Conduit, which is written in Rust, shouldn't require as much resources.

Because I want a secure phone with relatively good specs, relatively good design, battery life and camera quality. And because it is one of the very few devices with a user-unlockable and re-lockable bootloader.

And we really have no idea how close of a relationship Google, or any other corp for that matter, has with various intelligence agencies

Ok let's assume this is true, and US intelligence agencies have actually backdoored all US phone manufacturers. What about foreign phones? If this was true, someone the NSA is interested in could just defend themselves by e.g. buying a Chinese phone. All this effort, just to be defeated by foreign phone manufacturers? It wouldn't be worth it, which is why it's so highly unlikely.

But it could be used for smaller scale surveillance, like targeted at specific individuals

Why would this only be present in Pixels then? Google isn't interested in specific people. Intelligence agencies are. This would mean, that every phone in the world needs to be compromised using this sophisticated, stealthy technology, which is even more unlikely.

Not today, but recently at work, I, a DevOps engineer specializing in Linux and other Unix/Unix-like systems, was given the task of doing some admin and maintenance work on a few Windows servers...

I FUCKING HATE WINDOWS

THIS OS MAKES NO SENSE AND ADMINISTERING IT IS A NIGHTMARE

FUCK MICROSOFT!

[-] Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 6 days ago

Yeah, but it sucks, because of the heavy constraints of MV3

[-] Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 6 days ago

Nah. The only thing root does is massively decrease security. To actually own your phone, you need to install a proper, FOSS, private and secure OS in the first place. Pixels are great, because they support GrapheneOS.

Thanks a lot for creating this awesome project!

This is going to be very useful, until Proton finally implements native UP support in their Android apps. (They currently only support Google's proprietary FCM). Make sure to upvote this feature request: https://protonmail.uservoice.com/forums/284483-proton-mail/suggestions/47423924-support-unifiedpush-for-android-notifications

Hey guys,
I created this community to promote and talk about the UnifiedPush project. It aims to create a free and open source alternative to Google's proprietary Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM). Quite a few apps have already adopted the UP protocol, but there are still many FOSS apps lacking support for it. I will post GitHub issue threads where UP integration in FOSS apps is being discussed. I will also post about new apps that gained UnifiedPush support, and other useful tools that help with using UP. If you want to stay up-to-date about ongoing developments in the Android FOSS ecosystem in regards to push notifications, consider subscribing to !unifiedpush@lemmy.dbzer0.com

I also recommend following the official Mastodon account, joining the Matrix room and donating to support development!

so, about a month ago i stumbled upon the duckduckgo ai chat feature and wrote an article about how private their APIs are, and a few weeks after, a CLI client.

the thing is in a pretty mature stage now (its not like there is a lot of work to be done there tbh)

its not super private, but it is "private enough". the only thing duckduckgo has is your IP, which is usually not much unless you are on a residential connection with a dedicated IP
