That's an awesome idea! I think, this would be awesome to be able to play single player games with your friends!

But I do have to mention, that your cool project get's slightly ruined by the AI generated banner on your GitHub page. Is that really necessary?

Thank you so much for making this though! Your creativity and dedication is exactly what makes the open source community so great!

Yeah, that sucks. But there still is Aurora Store , where you can get it

Jup, that should work

I mean there is Waterfox, which is avaible on desktop as well as on Android. There is also the Zen browser, which is amazing for Desktop. Both theese browsers are fully FOSS and have explicitly positioned themselves against AI (Statement from Waterfox and Statement from Zen). And the great thing is, basicly all Firefox forks can easily sync interoperably and end to end encrypted thanks to Firefox Sync, so you could use Zen Browser on the desktop and sync it with Waterfox on your phone.

Lineage OS runs on a lot of devices

Yeah, I get that. But I just bought a used Pixel device, so I didn't have to give any money to Google. If you are willing to go a little bit older, you can get them for relatively cheap. I bought my 7a for like 150โ‚ฌ and it's still great hardware wise.

I mean, there are great custom Roms, like GrapheOS, LineageOS etc. They give you actual privacy and freedom from Google.

Oh, alright. Some of the other comments made me a little angry, that may have clouded my judgement on yours. So

You're paying for it. This pack costs money.

And even if it was free, the problem with AI isn't that you're not paying for it. It's that you are ripping off artists without their consent. All artists that are in this asset pack consented to their work being used.

Just because you're not a big company doesn't mean, that that is not stealing.

And yeah, a lot of independent artists works are being scraped and yes, they are struggling, have you ever talked to one?

Name one example

Hey, so I recently had the idea of proposing some new ideas, I had for the IT infrastructure of my local scouts organisation, mainly it's own nextcloud instance and website (and if that works well, maybey a matrix server and wiki, but website and nextcloud are much higher priority right now). But, I am wondering, what the best way to do the hosting would be. Using a VPS would be pretty nice, because there would be no upfront cost, but we would have to pay monthly fee and that's pretty hard to pitch for a new and untested idea, especially because we don't have that much regular funds/income. The other option would be to self host on hardware that stays in the building, but I am not quite shure, but then we would have a pretty steep upfront cost and I am not 100 percent shure, if we even have a proper network in the building.

The main thing, I am trying to ask here is, if any of you have ever done something similar before and if so, how you did it. Also I am thankful for any advice in general. I have done this already for my family, but doing this for an entire organistation is an entirely different thing. Thank you very much in advance!

Hey, so I have recently bought a raspberry pi 4 to use as a selfhosted Nextcloud and Immich server. I also thought about other stuff, I could host on there when I am not using the processing power and bandwidth and I came to the conclusion that I could seed legal torrents (I live in Germany, so I can afford no risks), that are ideally helping humanitarian projects (something like linux distros or open science data. Do you guys have some good ideas for where I could look for torrents that can effectively help people?

Click here to participate in the community vote

You have probably seen my previous post about the fact, that the banner of this community is currently AI genereated. My suggestion in that post was, that it would be pretty cool to replace that banner with a human drawn or photographed one to highlight and celebrate artist and the human spirit of this community. I honestly didn't expect it to blow up in the way it did, but it seems to be an issue, not only I, but many other people seemed to care about. So I think everyone would agree, that it would be a good idea to let the community on here decide what happens with our banner.

My idea would be, that we first have a general vote, if you as a whole community are interested in a banner change. Then, if enough people care about this vote and vote for yes, we can host a general art competition across the whole of Lemmy where artists, who care about this community can propose new banners, which they created themselves. The point in this challange would be to celebrate the creativity of specifically the human Lemmy community, so AI suggestions would be disallowed there. Then, all of you could vote on the banner and we could suggest the banner with the most votes to the mods of this community.

The vote is hosted on Mastodon, because it is not possible to do that on Lemmy. I have no followers on my Mastodon and I am posting the survey as a silent post, so other people probably won't interfere much here.

In my opinion, AI just feels like the logical next step for capitalist exploitation and destruction of culture. Generative AI is (in most cases) just a fancy way for cooperations to steal art on a scale, that hasn't been possible before. And then they use AI to fill the internet with slop and misinformation and actual artists are getting fired from their jobs, because the company replaces them with an AI, that was trained on their original art. Because of these reasons and some others, it just feels wrong to me, to be using AI in such a manner, when this community should be about inclusion and kindness. Wouldn't it be much cooler, if we commissioned an actual artist for the banner or find a nice existing artwork (where the licence fits, of course)? I would love to hear your thoughts!
