Yeah, some communities on Lemmy don't like it when you have a nuanced take on something so I'm pleasantly surprised by the upvotes I've gotten.

I'm running a Framework Desktop with a Strix Halo and 128GB RAM and up until Qwen3 Next I was having a hard time running a useful local LLM, but this model is very fast, smart and capable. I'm currently building a frontend for it to give it some structure and make it a bit autonomous so it can monitor my systems and network and help keep everything healthy. I've also integrated it into my Home Assistant and it does great there as well.

Yeah, I was told that I have no idea what living paycheck to paycheck actually is like because I have a 401k.

I agree with you that it needs to be local and self-hosted... I currently have an incredible AI assistant running locally using Qwen3-Coder-Next. It is fast, smart and very capable. However, I could not have gotten it setup as well as I have without the help of Claude Code... and even now, as great as my local model is, it still isn't to the point that it can handle modifying its own code as well as Claude. The future is local, but to help us get there a powerful cloud-based AI adds a lot of value.

And the drawback to a laser is that they can be very easy to see where it's coming from.

Caltrops are ridiculously easy to make from a box of nails, a torch and a welder.

What are the chances that visiting Steven Hawking is the most interesting/fun thing you can do, if you could freely time travel? I’d much rather go look at dinosaurs, or visit the construction of the pyramids, or go listen to Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech.

I would counter that if you have a time machine then you literally have all the time in the world and you can do all of those things, and more.

I know that the Black Panthers have a history of protecting polls while armed, but perhaps it's time we allow people of all colors to be armed and protecting the polls.

There's a lot more of us than there are of ICE.

Horrible for all involved.

I've been the boss in this situation, and it sucks.

And a year later I was there with HR and my boss.

And a year later my boss was there with HR and his boss.

Fuck HR.

I'm not signing up with a random website to read their article but... what? "Destructively scan" books, as in they rip the book apart in order to scan it?

I mean, if they paid the the books then they can do whatever they want with them. I don't see the problem.

It doesn't have to be unhealthy. They do have salads and grilled chicken, and even grilled chicken salads. Of course, the healthy items are quite a bit more expensive than the unhealthy items ($3 for large fries vs $4.20 for kale salad).

Give Marjorie credit for at least figuring it out

Don't think she didn't know it was a grift the entire time. She got in, got hers and is now getting out so she can do the whole 'news consultant' gig. The only thing I'll give her credit for is that she might just open a couple of eyes... but I don't think she's doing that out of a sense of service to her country, but instead it is just part of her personal rebranding.

A handheld Garmin GPS that didn't even have maps, a portable XM radio receiver, and a 12mp Olympus pocket camera (probably 5mp for video).

I just realized tonight that after having my CPAP for 5 years, the chronic shoulder pain I've lived with since I was a child is gone. My shoulder pain came from sleeping on my arms at night, to the point that they would lose circulation and feeling. Sometimes I even tore my shoulder trying to turn over when is lost feeling in my arms. I thought everyone must sleep like that and didn't realize I had sleep apnea and I was using my arms to help prop myself up. Now with my CPAP I can comfortably sleep on my back, and it has been years since I've had shoulder pain.

I highly recommend a CPAP for all around good health!

Indulge me for the coming delusion, but if we ignore who this is, forget all the reasons we know that we can't trust him, and allow ourselves just a few moments to hope that we could live in such a world.

A world where manual labor is no longer needed, where people can just exist as large mammals are meant to exist. Robots will handle it all and we can just do as we please... and the robots are going to be plentiful because once enough of the process of making a robot becomes automated, the cost of it will go to zero. But to get there it is going to require a ton of money... these robots are going to be way too expensive for people to actually buy them, so investors and governments will help out. The investors will eventually lose everything, but that will put us on the way to having everything we need to be created through completely automated systems.

Of course, there will still be jobs for those who really want them - or more likely, who want them and are good at them - or even more likely, who knows the right people... but if we can get our basic needs taken care of it night not fully end poverty but it would be a step in the right direction.

But, alas... It's Musk saying it so it's only to further enrich himself and won't actually happen.

From the article: The Open Data Institute that I co- founded in London has taken on the challenge of international co- ordination for a new standard that gives users control over their own data. It is called Solid (for social linked data) and the technical details are controlled by W3C, the web standards consortium. Solid seeks to decentralise the web. The platform can be used to build new applications that request access to user data. This data is stored in such a way that users have complete control over it.

I was curious how well it would work for switching between projects at work. I manage IT for several different offices and sometimes it is difficult to switch between my many various projects.

I don't want a new roof. I don't want a loan. I'd rather be doing something fun.

I went in and bumped up the graphics to 'High' and it is beautiful and plays great.

If you want it free from GOG you'll need to be sure you have it setup in Heroic Launcher.

I've heard that the reason Puerto Ricans can't vote is because Puerto Rico isn't a state and it is states that choose the president, not voters. But what about expats living abroad? Do they just get to pick which state gets their vote? If so, couldn't Puerto Ricans do that too?And what about people in DC? Where do their electoral college votes come from?

I'm sure I'm missing something here, I'm just not sure what.
