Some of the Cc is of the variety undulatus. Miscellaneous Cirrus in the lower part of the image.

Picture taken on 25.6.2023 at 01:27 local time.

A sun pillar is formed when horizontally floating hexagonal ice crystals (in this case within the Cirrus) reflect light. Kinda like the reflection of the setting sun over wavy water, but in this case upside down.

Sure, but the vast majority of people live in low lying areas and even then it doesn't shift that drastically. You need to climb a mountain to see the difference when it comes to applications of daily life.

Although now that I think about it. The same criticism applies to pretty much every definition of temperature that is based on the behaviour of matter. This also applies to Kelvin. Temperature is a property of matter and every type of matter behaves differently.

Sort of a continuation to that other post I just made here. Here's a picture I took last year of a spectacular sunset caused by Cirrus spissatus.. These clouds were quite high at over 8 km above the ground.

The secret recepie of a great sunrise or sunset is that the sky is covered in clouds that are high, but also thick enough to produce strong contrasts between the highlights and the shadows. Farther away in the direction of the Sun the sky has to be clear enough to allow sunlight to illuminate the bottom of the cloud. Here the cloud in qustion is Altocumulus stratiformis. It's quite a common cloud, and thus also the most common culprit of spectacular vistas such as these. Cirrus spissatus is also a great candidate, although that one is a bit rarer and doesn't usually form expansive sheets such as here.

So all the environmental science done there is somehow not good for the environment?

While there's definitely already too much tourists, about 90% of people visiting inland Antarctica are still scientists and their support staff.

[-] Deme@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Is there too much tourism in Antarctica? Yes.

Is this it? No.

If you think that the research institute operating the airstrip wants to have a tourist resort next door to their Antarctic research base, I do not know what to tell you.

Tää on 100% PR-tappelu. Optiikat on kaikki kaikessa ja omien käsien tahtaaminen viattomien verellä on iso tyylimoka.

Ps.

"The most important thing is the environmental benefits we can achieve by using large and modern aircraft of this type for Troll," Ms Brekke said.

"This can help to reduce total emissions and the environmental footprint in Antarctica.”

You wouldn't have needed to even read the article since OP copied this part into the post. Please, read before commenting.

Skynet theories aside, the whole "AI will solve trafic" thing is just dumb. Sure, I suppose we could one day perfect a system of cars working as a hivemind to optimize the flow of trafic, but that just makes it impossible for anyone not part in that hivemind (cyclists etc.) to use the road.

I suppose the "just one more lane bro" joke sort of applies here in that the problem caused by cars would be "solved" by doubling down on cars.
