Taking notes is important unless your memory is extremely good. If I had an e-reader with a touch screen, I'd use that to highlight important sections, but right now I just take notes in a text editor. You could also use a highlighter pen on a physical book or a print-out

"No investigation, no right to speak" is a helpful guideline. This is a good example of how to ask questions like these.

"Authoritarian" is not a meaningful descriptor because it applies to every state, hence "dictatorship of the proletariat/bourgeoisie". Russia has no colonies, is not imperialist, and is no more "authoritarian" than any country in the imperial core. Russia is a dictatorship of the bourgeoisie, but it's ended up resisting the imperial core and deserves critical support in that domain, not for its domestic policies.

yes, the suggestions with a few more upvotes were significantly longer

there's already a link in the post

This was a lecture delivered by Liu Shaoqi in 1939. You can read a transcription here. Since it's a longer text, we're preliminarily allocating two weeks for it.

This reading group is meant to educate, and people from any instances federated with Lemmygrad are welcome. Any comments not engaging in good faith will be removed (don't respond to hostile comments, just report them), as will off-topic comments.

You can post questions or share your thoughts at any time. When we move on to a new text, this thread won't be locked.

Welcome again to everybody. Make yourself at home. In the time-honoured tradition of our group, here is the weekly discussion thread.

The distinction between a non-imperialist capitalist country and an imperialist one is important; if the former is fighting against the latter, the situation is very different

Would this be the moment for the working class of Russia to organize to topple their oligarchy?

Organization is an ongoing project, but taking power without the support of the army would likely lead to a civil war, and now is not a good time for Russia to be destabilized

We're starting off with a very short one for the first week. This text was published in 1915, two years before the October revolution, and is sadly still highly relevant in the imperial core.

This reading group is meant to educate, and people from any instances federated with Lemmygrad are welcome. Any comments not engaging in good faith will be removed (don't respond to hostile comments, just report them).

You can post questions or share your thoughts at any time. We'll be moving on to a new text next week, but this thread won't be locked.

You can read the text here.

After several months of hiatus, the theory discussion group will be moving from Matrix to Lemmygrad, and now you (yes, you!) can suggest texts (yes, texts!) for us to read

Requirements:

  • Must be Marxist theory
  • Must be reasonably short (a somewhat larger text can be divided across several weeks)
  • Must not include any derogatory statements directed at rodents native to South America

Comments that suggest texts that fit these criteria will be selected based on upvotes. You can participate from any instance that's federated with Lemmygrad.
