My father put me on the Metallica train, so some could feasibly question my tastes lol. But when I dove deeper into more and more extreme metal myself, it was rather kind of spiritual.

I remember absolutely hating anything death metal or audible double bass that every "cool kid" at the time was into. I'd only listen to shit like, Manowar's Kings of Metal album, a Metallica "greatest hits" compilation which I was missing a disk lol, even some Judas Priest (Tim Owens era). I overcame my poor taste by listening to Slayer's Angel of Death finally and branching off from there. I count myself lucky to have known a friend back then who knew how to pirate stuff. Discovered Vader, Kalmah, and even Dragonforce (before their popularity) through him, as well as taught me how to torrent stuff, myself.

Today's pick is interesting to me cuz I heard this artist when I started my metal journey. I would browse all of the reviews on a website called The Metal Observer (which seems to be defunct nowadays), see if they included free tracks to download and would make a whole-ass cd of random tracks. This is how I discovered bands like Belphegor, Gojira before they became so friggin popular, a Swedish techdeath band that also used the name Havok, and lastly Anger As Art.

This band blew me away as a late teenager for some stupid reason, maybe it was the album art, or how "underground" it was, I don't even know. But they play some mid-grade thrash that for some reason still sticks to me today. Throughout the years I would look for signs of life from these guys and I would see they release albums but it kept me scratching my head as I never saw them on any streaming services. But then I looked for their Bandcamp, lo and behold here they are. Which makes sense as Bc is definitely the best way to support artists.

..Aaanyway, with that cool story done, here's some pissed off thrash lol.

Fairly competent modern crossover again today. Split up band from Washington D.C. Same vein as most of the recent modern crossover acts, namely Power Trip.

Great review of their discography! I have to agree that Antichrist was their peak to me imo lol. I don't really have much else to add other than the fact that you hit the nail on the head to me, as I also dislike the scratchy guitar tones of the beginning - I perform sacrilege in preferring their re-recordings of that stuff in the modern era.

Like @saplacat@lemmy.nocturnal.garden had mentioned about some formatting, perhaps a paragraph break between the different eras of the band would go well, especially for mobile readers!

Brutal simplistic death/thrash from Canada. Nice guitar tone with a little fuzz attached,, if that makes sense. More traditional stuff than what I've been posting from the sludge sector of metal, but it's catchy enough I feel.

๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ idk. Might as well call it Eye Beam but make it a pun and say I-beam instead lol.

Granted the name of the move itself could use a different word, I think they meant beam as in Hyper Beam, since the move itself is a special attack rather than physical.

Baroness - Vision (resources.tidal.com)

Progressive Sludge favorite of mine, aggressive and experimental. Hope you all enjoy the slow buildup and payoff to the main riff, it's rather orgasmic lol.

Fuck yea! Power Trip inspired stuff from Malaysia of all places! This is fantastic, the atmosphere definitely makes em stand out a bit more than your average modern crossover band.

My secret to finding all this different stuff is mainly the "Similar Artists" tab on each band's metal archives page, click each one and find out which are on streaming services and go on a little excursion lol. There have been many nights where I go down these rabbit holes for hours at a time, mining for diamonds. Not every search yields stuff presentable in my opinion, but that is how I found the sludge/thrash mix that I've been posting recently and it turns out it's some of my favorite stuff now.

The similarities between LotM and this band are rather apparent upon doing a little more research - LotM and RfD both had members in the instrumental post-rock band Pelican so I imagine they definitely influenced each other.

Rest easy my man, life comes at us all the time, and smacks us right in the fuckin face with cheap shots sometimes. Don't force it, let yourself be free and enjoy what you do. I'm lookin forward to that discog review, and further posts from you, and others as well of course!

Think I'll post a weekly upload in this community, anything that isn't thrash metal related but I still deeply enjoy. Today's pick is from a Danish Melodic Death/Power metal band with a heavy as fuck sound.

Anthrax - Madhouse (resources.tidal.com)

It's a madhouse! ..or so they claim!

Fucking classic Anthrax, I challenge you to not bang your head at that main riff. But how boring that would be. Just enjoy the song lmao.

After a few more spins and listening to other Warbringer albums and other bands in general, then coming back to this album, I have to say it's damn strong. The themes hold the album together like glue and it's a fantastic message throughout about oppression from the very top of society to the bottom, from within and without lol. I honestly think this alone elevates it above Woe to the Vanquished, and it's almost better than Weapons of Tomorrow for me right now!

Hard to pick a single track to share from this album as each one is like 2 mins long, the titles of each track are repeatedly barked respectively, and there's a shit load of cacophony throughout. But it's such a good time - it's fun as hell lol. Loud, short and to the point, these guys combine death/thrash with hardcore and punk and it's very simplistically brutal. I'd imagine their entire set during a show is just a constant pit. I discovered this band from Chicago through a "similarity" to Lair of the Minotaur, and while the vibe can be a little similar, Ready for Death are off doing their own thing.

Five minute instrumental from a long time thrash band. Awesome riffs with melodic solos keep it interesting throughout. Fine red mist could either describe seeing red when you're angry or what is left of a human when they meet an excessively destructive force.

I was literally gonna post Merciless Onslaught tomorrow, but you beat me to another Metal Church song! Guess I'll have to post another awesome thrash instrumental lol

Dude, appreciate you catching up on my posts! xD

From the Dark Souls videogame series comes this story of Knight Artorias in Death/Doom Metal form, a nearly 12 minute epic.

I'm a little torn on posting this as this is evenly split right down the middle of crossover thrash and hardcore. If I had to liken it to a similar band, it would be in the vein of Power Trip - you know, the chunkier side of crossover. But it's a little hard to ignore the Hardcore in the voice (nevermind the guest vocals from Knocked Loose, also hardcore punk).

When the riffs hit, though, they're a beast and I do find myself headbanging and groovin along, even to the breakdown at the end lol.

Guys, get a load of these nerds! Just discovered this energetic group last night lol gave this whole album a spin and picked this track as my share for today - the album's triumphant, mid-paced epic with a storming finish. These geeks play symphonic thrash metal with touches of power metal, vocals are a bit on the messy sneering side, kinda reminding me a tiny bit of Warbringer's John Kevill. I've never played D&D but with music like this, it does seem fun lmao.

Celtic Frost worship mixed with a helping of Slayer/Venom. Yes this is Doom/Thrash, and would go on to inspire many underground bands.
