Generative AI is incapable of contributing new material, because Generative AI does not sense the world through a unique perspective. So the comparison to creators that incorporate prior artists work is a false comparison. Artists are allowed to incorporate other artists work in the same way that scientists cite other's work without it being plagiarism.

In art, in science, we stand on the shoulders of giants. AI models do not stand on the shoulders of giants. AI models just replicate the giants. Society has been fooled to think otherwise.

Putting everyone you disagree with on some but not all issues into a tribalistic "them" category does nothing but sow more division and entrenches those with small points of disagreements to instead have big disagreements with you.

How about we don't do more of that.

I've said this before, I'm going to say it again: people with money spend it to save time.

Managing 2FA, software updates, account signin, device pairing, billing, privacy policy updates, cookie notices.... This shit does not save people time. It does the complete opposite.

These products are not built for consumers. These products are purely anticompetitive schemes, propping up crappy business models, trying to cash in on the data harvesting gold rush.

"Hard to understand?" Is a question more complex than it might appear on the surface. There are obvious examples of ambiguity in speech which lead to complete misunderstanding.

But "hard to understand?" may also satisfy the criteria of "effort to understand". Just because a message was understood does not mean the audience was able to hear it effortlessly. And that boils down to consideration.

It's a two way street. Correcting mistakes because of apparent lack of effort is probably not warranted, but a speaker is not entitled to a happy audience either

As with many online feuds, I think a lot of these problems typically arise because of a lack of operating under the assumption others are acting in good faith.

I think there is a very fine line between prescribing language because of a world view that insists on conformity, and correcting grammer and vocabulary because being clear and understood is kinda the point of language.

You are not totally wrong, but I think if you were totally right, the internet as a world-changing technology would have never come to be in the first place. An internet operated by a single company is basically just a cable service. I think right now there certainly is apathy in the public consciousness towards the value add of keeping the internet decentralized, because it is taken for granted. But I think this is temporary, human society has always been reactionary in that way, we let things back slide, until it gets bad, and we only do something about it when we feel the pain.

I guess it boils down to magazine reloading making prone firing viable, especially in coordinated firing.

Who the f. has time to manage all these bills, apps, accounts... What's next, 2FA to sit around for an app to update, so you can sit through a "what's new" tutorial to unlock a pen just so you can write something down, all for the "convenience" of not having to run out of ink?

You know what people with money and no time do? They buy 20 dumb pens and then just toss one in the trash when it runs out.

The intersection between people who have money to burn and patience to deal with tech bullshit is extremely small.

The parodies write themselves now.

This is currently my primary frustration with Connect: complete opaqueness regarding instances.

I understand that one design philosophy might argue that instances shouldn't matter, so why show it at all. But it does matter, especially on All, and in comments. I think at the current and near-term state of development, obscuring instances creates more confusion than it alleviates.

  • In this example, I have no idea what community this is. Where is "here"? "General" is a super broad category (does a multi-community even make sense for this type of community name?). Is this /c/general for a general purpose instance, or /c/general of an instance dedicated to a very specific topic? Is that instance worth checking out? Who knows?
  • Is this an instance I'm subscribed to yet?
  • is this the same /c/general I was in last time with a moderation policy and moderators I didn't like, or a new one?
  • Is my instance defederated from seal_of_approval and will they receive my message? Who knows?
  • Are most responders coming from lemmy.world, from sketchy instances loaded with bots or is there good traction from smaller instances? Is there instance brigading going on?
  • Is this an impersonator of seal_of_approval?
  • is this a specific community that spams a lot and I should block it?
  • What moderation rules apply to this instance?

I can't block entire instances myself...

I realize that a lot of these problems have some sort of workaround by drilling down into community details and profiles. Ain't nobody have time for that.

I realize that specific UI solutions could be introduced to tackle each of these problems individually in a user-friendly manner. But we're not there and who knows when we will get there.
