Gotta actually link things if you want people to find them, my friend! 😉

‘Bough’ and ‘bow’ are pronounced the same

Except, of course, when "bow" is pronounced "bow" instead.

I honestly never know what people mean by "niche", everyone seems to have a different cutoff. But also the word you're looking for is "communities", we users are the lemmings 😄

It's community. But to answer your main question:

  • sub.rehab lists some alternatives to old subreddits, official ones marked as such
  • lemmyverse lets you keyword search communities hosted everywhere

Apologies if this is covered in a FAQ somewhere, I couldn't find anything!

If I'm part of a community here, but the sole moderator has been AWOL, is there a process for getting more mods assigned just so any issues can be dealt with until the original mod hopefully returns? I tried searching for a requests community or a support ticket email address etc and came up empty handed but I might just have missed it.

Thanks for any info.

Somehow overnight our little spoons spontaneously organised themselves into perfect order.

I can confirm neither of us did this on purpose, as you can see our usual cutlery storage method is just "throw it in the drawer it's fine".

What's the word for the opposite of entropy?

After standing staring at the sight for a bit, we realised they may have done this to draw our attention to how badly the drawer needs cleaning. So it's ok, you don't need to ;)

On Lemmy it is literally called cake day in your profile. Admittedly derivative, but I like cake so whatever.

Coming into an established venue and insisting everything change to be more like what you're used to is certainly A Choice.

I like to think most of it is people just genuinely not realising things already have a name, so as long as we continue to nip the "sublemmy" stuff in the bud it'll peter out. Saw a lot of the same stuff on Mastodon last year but it settled down pretty quick.

EDIT: Issue "fixed" itself after a few days, see comments.

I'm aware of the ongoing issues with federation being a bit patchy, and have got used to manually searching for posts / comments to pull them in and sync them. No problems there, usually.

But the last couple of days I've seen two threads in particular that seem to work everywhere else, but never made it to .world and can't be pulled in manually either.

The first was https://lemmy.world/post/1005008 (throws an error, but visible at https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/post/600356) which also posted multiple times to the community it's in so I thought the issue was maybe something to do with that.

The second is https://lemm.ee/post/703295, which did not have any multiple-posting issue as far as I can tell.

For both of these threads I've tried manually searching for the post AND for comments. The former allows me to search up a reply, but then gives a couldnt_find_post. error when I try to click through. The latter doesn't find any replies at all.

Just thought this might be an interesting data point as it seems to be different to the typical problems we've been having. If anyone has any idea what's broken with these two posts I'd love an explanation!

I see Sir PTerry, I upvote.

And hey, just sliding this totally smoothly into the conversation, did you all know we have !discworld@lemmy.ml (Lemmy / Kbin)

Nobody in The Shire seemed to have hay fever, so that still sets us apart at least.

It's day 2 of my 3.5 day stint home alone without supervision.

So far I've left clothes everywhere, traipsed bits of sewing detritus from one end of the house to another, there's ribbon on the bathroom floor and tbh I don't even know why, it's not like I was sewing with ribbon.

I've spent all day in a nightie watching Star Trek*, I've eaten all the sorbet and am eyeing up the mini Twister lollies that I was under strict instructions not to touch. Macaroni cheese sandwiches for tea last night. No regrets.

Why is there a half-knitted jumper on the living room floor? Why not. Might try cutting a load of my hair off later.

And JUST as I write this post, it's just started tipping it down. Maybe the lollies will get a reprieve after all!

What are the most degenerate things you look forward to when you've got the house to yourself? I've got two more days to fill, need ideas.

* why is Captain Kirk telling this young girl how pretty she is. she's like 10, this is creepy af.

I've been on Lemmy for 12 days apparently, feels like a lifetime! And I keep seeing posts about how it's too empty or there's no content outside of the Reddit drama or whatever.

So it got me thinking, am I just subbed to way more stuff than most? Because I go into the "all" tab maybe once a day, and keep busy in "subscribed" the rest of the time.

Here's my stats:

  • 121 Lemmy communities
  • 42 Kbin magazines
  • 163 total

That's for this account, although I also have a second account for slightly different topics so there's probably another 20-30 or so unique subs on there.

How about you?

Since it's Throwback Thursday and all (and since I'm waiting on a driver install and need something to do for about three minutes), I thought it might be fun to look back at our first ever games!

For me, other than working my way through the old Brackey's tutorial to make an endless ball-rolling game, the first one I ever made and completed was Good Luck With The Lamps, a very basic pixel art platformer where you're just a normal regular bear trying to turn all his lamps off and go to bed.

But the lamps have other ideas! spooky hand wave

This was for the "My First Game Jam" Summer 2020 edition which lasted about two weeks, if it'd been any less there's no way we could have finished. I say "we" because this was actually a joint effort between me and my SO, who afterwards vowed never to work with me again lol.

Things learned:

  • If you're doing pixel art the pixels should probably all be the same size
  • Unity's tilemap system
  • Basic 2d animations
  • How to make a cut scene
  • I hate making platformers!

Ok, your turn!

Ok fine I'll start. Got married recently, it was about as stressful and mortifying as any such form of public performance, so I'd made my new husband agree we could get a Greggs immediately after the ceremony to stop me feeling sick.

We rocked up into the queue as a party of ten, me still holding a ridiculous bouquet, most of our friends looking self-conscious in their wedding finery.

Woman at the till gave us our cheese savoury stotties for free by way of congratulations, and the guy working in the back claimed it was the "Northernest thing" he'd ever seen. I have never been more proud.

(worked a treat to settle my nervy stomach for the rest of the day, as well)

I find myself looking back on a week ago as if it was a whole other age of the world. Logged in to lemmy.world for the first ever time, saw you'd created this place 24 minutes prior, it was like it was meant to be 😢

Long live UKCasual!

I thought I was addicted to Reddit, but compared to some of you I was totally fine all along! Hurrah!

Coincidentally a day or so before this community was created, myself and my husband started a rewatch from the beginning.

We've been together for about ten and a half years at this point, and he's always been if not enthusiastic then at least supportive of my constant references. Visits to the angry dome, regular notch up-knocking with my spice weasel, you know the drill. For a while we were even in a World of Warcraft guild together called Fighting Mongooses, I mean come on.

Well, it is with great despair that I report in today. It turns out as of this rewatch, he finally thought it time to let me know...he doesn't think Futurama is actually that great. Ok, acceptable to watch, but not great.

A suspiciously...neutral...opinion if you ask me.

I don't know what to do with this information.

Ok so I watch a lot of devlog videos, and talk to a lot of wannabe devs on Discord (definitely not using "wannabe" as an insult there, it applies to me too!) and there's this concept of a dream game that keeps coming up.

I've been playing video games since the 1980s and yeah, there are always improvements I'd love to one day see in every genre I play. But this idea of having a specific dream game is just entirely foreign to me. There are way too many possibilities to have just one dream!

My first attempt at a real game, I quickly found out it was going to be way too big and way too far above my current skill level. So I just...dropped it. Yeah I might go back one day, it would make for a cool game, but beyond that I'm not super attached.

So basically my question is, how common is this attitude among game devs? Do you all have a specific dream "one day" game in the back of your mind? Or maybe you're already working on it? Or are you like me and you just enjoy making games in general?

Hi, so, not really sure what rules if any @NoxiousPluK@lemmy.blahaj.zone has in mind for this community. But just delete this thread if it's against them, no worries.

With that out of the way, I thought it might be fun for us all to share a bit about our current project(s), along with anywhere people can find devlogs or demos or whatever else.

Sounds like a typical self-promo thread? Maybe. And maybe that's not allowed. But I have no horse in this race, my only "game" is currently a very janky prototype and my devlog channel exists only in my mind.

I can't get enough of other people's devlogs and love to discover new interesting sounding projects, so here we are lol.

Wotcha making?
