Rome. I was so sad when they cancelled it.

[-] Trihilis@feddit.nl 16 points 10 months ago

It's worse. They're not even apologizing for their actions but the "confusion and angst".

It's kind of like saying "we're sorry you feel that way" and are somehow misunderstanding what they're trying to do. They might as well have said, sorry dumbasses but it's going to happen regardless. Perhaps in some watered down form, perhaps not this/next year, but it will happen.

A lot of people like to think the world is either black or white with no in-between. As someone who works in construction and renovates houses a lot I can confirm that there are definitely good land lords as well as bad ones. My gf rented an appartment from old people before I met her and she paid almost nothing (400 euros all-inn), you can't even get social housing for that here. And the state of maintenance was excellent. Also in the more rural areas here the private rent sector seems to be run by mostly decen people.

Then sometimes we have to renovate ex-student housing and a lot of times those buildings are absolute dumps (to the point where you can barely call them habitable) with insane prices. Especially in the large cities I see some really bad practise. Thankfully a lot of those malicious kind of landlords are put on trial (hence why we start renovating after they sold the property).

Disclaimer: I don't live in the US and tenants have a lot of rights here to the point where landlords are forced to provide a certain standard of living. Unfortunately (foreign) students seem to not know this, this is the reason you mostly see malpractice with students here.

I agree with you that a lot of brands should be ashamed of their price/quality ratio, but of course the world isn't always black and white (expensive is bad Vs cheap is good). I have bought some pretty cheap shoes for work where the soles were disintegrated after a few months and the safety nose (whatever you call it in English, not my native language) was already showing through the rubber. This meant they didn't met safety standards anymore for the places I work and I had to throw them away. Then I bought a more expensive (literally double the price) German brand and I already have them for over a year with little wear (so they are already lasting more than twice the cheap ones). Then I have also had an expensive Italian brand that didn't even last two months before the heel padding was completely gone. The problem I have with cheap brands (and especially no-name) is that whenever I buy them and they turn out to be good, the next time I go to the shoe store they're suddenly out of the assortment (seems to happen a lot here in Europe, especially the weird Amazon UUKKO/UFELLGOOD brands etc.). This means I'm taking a gamble each time I buy the no-name brand.

I have had similar experiences with sneakers. Some brands are truly terrible regardless we there they are expensive or cheap.

What I'm trying to say is that if you find a cheap brand (the 25-40 euro range) a lot of the time here they either become expensive eventually or they somehow are taken out of the stores assortment for whatever reason. Buying a slightly more expensive or expensive brand at least usually gets me reliable results. And I know that most of the time the brand will still exist.

Now imagine people voting for you despite it being against their interests.

Literal clown world.

For real. Even though there is shitposting here too, there is much better conversation going and not the typical "no u" bullshit Reddit is infested with.

I feel like most quality posters left Reddit and it shows in many of the larger subs. Unfortunately not all topics are discussed here yet so I still sometimes have to go to Reddit (don't have an account anymore). But when I do, holy shit the comment section is a dumpster fire.

I know too little about radioactive water and what the acceptable amount is for a person to eat through a fish that has been swimming in it

But holy shit can these stupid politicians who also don't know shit about it stop insulting everyone's intelligence with Simpsons (was literally an episode) like ways of convincing people.

I only trust well regarded scientists and experts, not some slimy politician. Literally kindergarten tier persuasion tactics.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Imagine being the donor and your organ goes to someone like that. It's like someone pissing on your grave (assuming the donor is dead or will die, article doesn't mention the organ).

Also the comment section from that article, holy shit what a dumpster fire.

A platform is as good as it's users. I left Reddit because it turned into a shithole. I'll do the same with Lemmy if that happens.

I actually like the multiple smaller communities here, it's part of the charm. If you think an instance is becoming too big just go to another one.

You can't really do that on Reddit since everyone is on the same big instance.

Also leaving Reddit is the best thing for my mental health I've done in a while

The record and movie industry must be paying out of their asses to have this shit taught in schools.

Let's teach our kids the importance of making billionaires richer and not actual important stuff like checking facts or making a well informed decision when voting.

Absolute dystopian bullshit.

[-] Trihilis@feddit.nl 6 points 10 months ago

Yeah I don't get it either. I see people moving back to Reddit because of this shit. Lemmy is already much less user friendly. Defederating over dumb shit just makes people move away again since they can't find the content they want without having ar least a couple accounts.
