I dunno, the 2008 crash did a prolonged amount of damage, had it been a little deeper than it was we may not have recovered. At least back then we had sane people in charge.

DOGE was more surgical and was used to take out groups in government the right hates. These programs did not cost much money at all and often saved money. Couple that with the costs of firing people illegally (legal fees, reinstating fired people when a judge orders it, the government paying other people more money to do required jobs that were eliminated, etc), and you have a massively expensive vendetta campaign.
