In addition to what Emotet said, I‘d add that no matter how closed or open the platform is (and it isn’t even as closed up) no one outside of Lemmy will care as long as it’s a compelling package.

Actual black for the pro phones?

The good news for Quest owners is that Meta recently added support for Netflix in the Quest browser, complete with 1080p streaming.

Netflix hadn’t significantly updated its VR app since porting it to the Quest in 2019. It never gained passthrough or download support, and its resolution stayed pinned at 480p.

The game remains in invite-only early access for now, with no information about an App Lab/store release yet.

Quoting from their Discord announcement (more info and images there), outlining their new, larger project direction:

Introducing: the Orion-Class Orbital Ring

“The Orion” is a massive cylindrical spacecraft, providing artificial gravity at the outer edges and pure Zero-G at the center. The Orion is subdivided into unique districts. At each, you can compete against other teams or complete challenges, playing co-op, solo or competitively. And it's not alone, the Orion floats through the galaxies amongst an armada of other orbital stations.

The Orion could easily fit more than 20 of the old stations that we showed off at Vegas, with many more game-modes available. This game is BIG.

What’s a day on the Orion like? Come aboard and kick off your visit with an intense competitive match, then catch an elevator to the Low Grav Zone or meet a friend in the Parkour District, then make the jump to 0g to challenge each other to a game you can only play floating in the core. Perhaps a relaxing game of Galactic Golf while goofing off with new pals is more your style, or just talking in the view from a Zen garden on the rim. Or maybe, you want to get lost on a vast new climbing route, exploring some of the station’s strange mysteries!

And every corner of the Orion feels alive, buzzing with the energy of countless players. It’s more than just a game space. The Orion will feel like a living, breathing community, whether you’re walking through the bustling market area, hearing the roar of cheers from a nearby game, or chatting with friends in a cozy cafe.

We hope that every player finds something for themselves to enjoy on the Orion, and we hope you won't mind a little more of a wait to come try it out.

Not quite ceasing development, more on life support. They were quite open about their issues and the writing has been on the wall for a while. I‘m curious what they’re working on next.

Every weekend through August 12, we’ll be giving you temporary free access to two acclaimed multiplayer games on Meta Quest, so you can try out something new with your friends. […]

The inaugural Free Weekend kicks off this Friday, July 12 at 3PM [CET] and runs through Monday, July 15 at 1AM [CET]. During that period, you’ll be able to access one-hour trials of both the hit tactical shooter Breachers and the one-stop shop for all things paddle-sports, Racket Club.

[…] the developer was also asked if the Quest version - Blade & Sorcery: Nomad, will get a Quest 3 update. However, that seems unlikely as The Baron cited the additional upkeep this would require.

"As much as I wish there could be a Quest 3 standalone version of Nomad with improved graphics and is something in between current Nomad and PCVR, it would be madness because then there would be three versions of Blade and Sorcery to upkeep."

It’s been out for over half a year now, and afaict there‘s still only Supernatural, Swordsman VR and Drunkn Bar Fight that support it.

Has anyone come across other games that also have it?

The Meta Horizon Store is launching August 5 with Early Access labels instead of App Lab.

Meta says it will make publicly discoverable all previously launched App Lab apps as well as those under development and review. Previously, App Lab projects were unlisted and could only be found by searching for their exact name, with the exception of a small number recently.

[In most mixed reality apps the boundary is] superfluous, since you can already see the environment around you, and downright annoying because it means you can't utilize your full room as a playspace.

Since v57 of the Meta XR Core SDK select whitelisted developers have been allowed to disable this boundary. Now with v66 of the SDK, any developer can do this.

The only "catch" is that the boundary will only be disabled while passthrough is being rendered, ie. in mixed reality. Fully immersive VR still requires the boundary, which makes sense for safety reasons given you can't see your surroundings.

If you're unaware, Lynx-R1 is a French standalone headset first announced in 2020 with an open periphery design. Had it shipped on time, in 2022, it would have been the first consumer standalone headset with color passthrough mixed reality. But after repeated delays it was beaten to market by Meta Quest Pro, and Lynx still hasn't shipped to all backers while Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro shipped in volume in the meantime.

In a Kickstarter update post, CEO and founder Stan Larroque said that the last year has been "excruciating". He claims his company's inability to pay its manufacturer, Compal, resulted in produced headsets not being delivered, and says this situation resulted from intended investors not following through with their funding.

Remains to be seen how it actually plays, but I can imagine that the general gameplay is very difficult to get right.

The studio today announced that *Attack on Titan VR: Unbreakable *is releasing on Quest in early access on July 23rd, priced at just $5.

While it’s difficult to argue with such an honest price tag, the new gameplay video is a pretty stark departure from the concept trailer released in June 2023, which admittedly features pre-rendered animations.

That’s awesome news, thanks :)

Don’t like it, but I do think the world building tools are quite decent. Out of all the social apps I’ve enjoyed banter the most so far with it’s physics based movement.

I‘m not defending them here. I‘m just saying that the Quest 2 will probably go a different way.

Most of the things they’ve ended support on were failures (Oculus Go), were sold for a very short time with not many users (Quest 1) or turned out to be not the future in their eyes (basically everything PCVR).

Quest 2 has been sold for a long time and still is, has tens of millions of users and is clearly the path that they’ve decided to focus their energy on.

Again, they absolutely shouldn’t leave people hanging and at the very least have a buy back program or something similar. I‘m not trying to excuse their behavior.

Are you talking about asking Siri about bedtime stories? Because that has been a thing for a while. Apple said that AI stuff was coming later this summer with a waitlist, so none of the new stuff should be there yet.

Two things come to my mind, the first one being limiting referral links being to a dedicated thread or pointing people towards meta-dog. Afaict there hasn’t been a spam issue with that yet, but it seems to make sense and it probably wouldn’t hurt to put that in the sidebar.

I wonder how many things will break without servers, especially things that don’t seem like they rely on one, but still do. Maybe simply because of shitty programming or unnecessary dependencies. Reminds me of this story: How one programmer broke the internet by deleting a tiny piece of code and this xkcd strip.

My guess is a whole lot more than anyone would assume.

I don’t know all of them, but I was talking about React being a framework, not a language.

Same. Is there a mastodon account or any other place to get an update/info on what’s going on there?
